That list of players was in reference to the players that were at both clubs prior to Rafa taking over at Liverpool and who are still playing for United and Liverpool today. As everyone bases their figures up to the present season. The basic point I am making is that Rafa is actually trying to build a squad to compete with a Ferguson squad which began years before Rafa was even manager of Liverpool. Liverpool probably needs another two or three seasons of development. More youth players have to step up to the first team and more quality(expensive) transfered players need to be bought before a year in, year out challenge can be expected or even demanded. If that sounds familiar, well it is cause thats what clicked for United...the golden generation of youth players matched with some expensive transferred players every few seasons gave United continued success.
I have fairly realistic expectations and this season United have been the best team in the league. I expected more fight from Chelsea for the title and I thought it would be Liverpool and Arsenal fighting for third. With Villa, Man City, etc going for fourth.
Liverpool are a shambles off the pitch and play football I don't like on it but Ferguson took six years of some pretty awful stuff before he got going. Liverpool are living proof that if a club gets the manager wrong, it can do decades of damage. United will be at a crossroads roads when Ferguson finishes, that transition after Ferguson may not be so smooth. I'm sure us at Anfield will happily step in and fill the void
How quickly present day United fans have forgotten:
"Three years of excuses and it's still crap. Ta ra Fergie."
