there are no new linesmen, they have an official behind each goal to spot goals and situations in a crowded box. they are only in the europa league for a trial at the moWavefield Ds 55cm at 13E 19E and 28E receiving everything out there on 2 dm800hd
previous life dm800hd and 500c on cable

New linesmen
I think television replays would be a good idea like they do in rugby.Comment

yeh but the wait can be exiting and it doesnt happen to often does it in a rugby game
i think a system like hawkeye in tennis could be used where each team gets 1 or 2 contests against a decision cos the number of times we are wrongly flagged offside is unrealComment

jackpot dont know how many rugby matches you have seen. but any time the tv ref is called on witch is very seldom it takes about 2 mins maybe even less for the right dicision to be made how long did it take to take the penalty in the celtic v arsenel game well going on 4mins .my point is can anyone tell me can the new officials over rule the ref or the linesmen in decisions they makeComment

no.. the referee's decison is final.. the goal line assistants operate under the same laws as the touchline assistants
The Assistant Referee's can bring something to the attention of the Referee, but it's ultimately his/her decision, he/she can choose to overrule if he/she so wishesAssistant referees may be appointed whose duties, subject to the decision of the referee, are to indicate:
• when the whole of the ball leaves the field of play
• which team is entitled to a corner kick, goal kick or throw-in
• when a player may be penalised for being in an offside position
• when a substitution is requested
• when misconduct or any other incident occurs out of the view of the
referee
• when offences have been committed whenever the assistant referees
have a better view than the referee (this includes, in certain circumstances,
offences committed in the penalty area)
• whether, at penalty kicks, the goalkeeper moves off the goal line before the
ball is kicked and if the ball crosses the lineLast edited by opsmonkey; 20 September, 2009, 16:43.

thanks for the answer opps, but still cant see them been of any use if the refs decision is finalComment

they are there for when the referee cant see, or needs assistance.. the same way a referee cant see if a player is offside as they're not in line.. they very rarely overrule decisions..
If a goal line assistant see's the ball cross the line he will signal to the ref and the ref will go with the assistant unless the refereee is in a better position to make the call, which would be highly unlikely..
eg.. Pedro Mendes Disallowed Goal - Man Utd v Spurs
The goal line assistant would have clearly seen that the ball crossed the line, told the referee and the goal would have stood.
as for an assistant overruling a referee it never happens.. what happens is:
The referee gives a decision as he see's it
An assistant will wave his flag on the side or stand with his arm up behind the goal if he beleives he saw something.
The referee will come over for a chat
The assistant will tell him what he saw
The referee will make an infomed decision based on the assistants testimony
Normally resulting in a penalty, goal, foul.. whatever it was
referee's rely on their assistants for everything. Only a very poor referee will discount evidence given to them by an assistant when the assisitant is in a better position.
The only time it realy happens these days is when an assistant flags for offside or a foul but the ball is rolling back to the goalkeeper or a clear advantage can be had , to keep the flow of the game going the referee may chose to signal play on, thank the assistant with a thumbs up to acknowledge he agrees with the decision but chooses to play on. When it comes to major decisions like penalties or goals the referee will go with the assisitant 9 out of 10 timesLast edited by opsmonkey; 22 September, 2009, 22:58.

Go to fourth official as in rugby, cannot fail and will cut out all the crap the ref has to take if he makes a mistake.
Electronic, tv replay and any other gadget that takes the maybe,s out of the decision.Comment

So at what point do you stop the game??
One example, lets say the ball bounces off the underneath of the crossbar hits the goal line and is cleared but is still in play,
Does the ref blow for a time-out while the video ref decides whether its a goal or not??
And if so how is the game restarted if it's decided that the ball hasn't gone over the line.. 50-50 ball or what??
The mere thought of it makes me want to puke
