Sir Alex Ferguson is understood to now favour Pep Guardiola as his eventual successor at Manchester United.
On Tuesday, the club's vice-chairman Ed Woodward said that the Old Trafford hierarchy know what "type of manager" will succeed Ferguson, while it was reported in the Spanish press in the summer that Ferguson had met Guardiola in New York.
ESPN has learnt, however, that chief executive David Gill and a member of the Glazer family also met the former Barcelona manager, who left his role at the Camp Nou after four successful years, at that time.
While a United source said that the meeting was "informal", the future is understood to have been discussed.
For his part, Guardiola is known to view United as a particularly attractive proposition. Although he retains interest in Chelsea, AC Milan and Bayern Munich, the Catalan is said to find the sense of history and atmosphere at Old Trafford especially enticing.
In his entire Barcelona career as both a player and manager, Guardiola - who, as a player, was targeted by Ferguson but ultimately signed for Brescia - faced United more than any other English side, and a Catalan source said the club have always fascinated him.
Ferguson and United do not just see Guardiola as one of the few coaches with the required strength of personality to take on such a massive job after the Scot eventually retires, but also an ideal fit given his commitment to both youth and attacking football.
Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has previously been seen as Ferguson's successor-in-waiting but, although the Red Devils manager retains a good relationship with the Portuguese, other members of the club's hierarchy - particularly Bobby Charlton - are said to be less keen due to a perceived short-term approach.
While the expected date of Ferguson's retirement remains, as ever, undetermined, the manager is widely known to want a significant say in who succeeds him and for the necessary structures to be put in place beforehand for a seamless transition.
When Ferguson was last expected to retire in 2002, only to perform a U-turn, he expressed his dismay that the club had lined up Sven Goran-Eriksson. The United boss criticised the Swede for "not changing much" at his teams.
He is now determined to ensure there is no repeat of that situation and that the right person is in place to prolong his legacy.
On Tuesday, chief executive Woodward said: "We have a view as to what type of manager we want and how and when we'll go about it. But it's in the drawer and long mat it stay in the drawer."

I've been saying D Moyes for years, nobody has agreed with me though.
wonder where carlos quiroz went and steve mclaren he wanted them before and moyes

not sure guardiola will be right and i dont think he would be a stayer, he left barca

he did a very good job at barca tho but inherited a very good team, if he came to united he would have to have a bag of cash for players as would any manager have we got it??

i still think it will be jose and i think he will stay for a good while too i get the impression he would relish the job and i think he would see it as his mission to emulate ferguson

his style has changed at madrid his teams are more open now than his chelsea days i think we would expect the same if it ever happened

time will tell i suppose moyes might have a shout but for me hes too inexperienced (no disrespect to everton) for the next tier of football

Carlos and Mclaren both have been sacked for not doing a great job as managers. Guardiola I agree with you, great manager and likes to bring the kids into his way off playing, done great at Barcelona then says he's tired and left the club, does SAF ever have a day off in a year Mourinho would suit UTD, would the Glazers have or give him the cash to buy his own players, he does like to be left on his own with his job like he did at CFC, can't see him being left like that at Madrid and I recon he does want the job at UTD, I read he brought a house in London which made me think he was going back to CFC before they made Matteo there manager.
Probably 2 seasons left with SAF still at UTD so why not bring the mananger in now as his assistant. I hope it's not Phelan.

"This isn't just a job to me." "It's a mission. I am deadly serious about it. Some people would reckon too serious. We will get there, believe me. And when it happens, life will change for Liverpool and everyone else - dramatically."

I think it will be a name and i cant see any manager wanting to work under fergie for a year or 2

the reason i mentioned mclaren and qeueroz is cos fergie himself said they would make great utd managers one day

maybe we should not let him pick our manager eh

23&24 november I will be at old trafford for the unveiling of sir Alex Fergusons statue and the game against Q.P.R. #backforthefirsttime...( Him and SAF must of made up with each other.)

Manchester United have been granted planning permission to erect a statue of Sir Alex Ferguson outside Old Trafford.

The nine-foot statue will go in a canopy to be built outside the North Stand ? recently renamed the Sir Alex Ferguson stand.

The club announced last year they had commissioned Philip Jackson, an award-winning fellow Scot, to make the tribute.

The MEN revealed earlier this month that the plans had been submitted.

A spokeswoman for Trafford council confirmed that the statue plan has now been approved.

It will stand on a plinth and be similar to those of Sir Matt Busby and the ?holy trinity? of George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at the stadium.

The council granted permission on condition that the statue is erected within three years and that samples of materials - including details of colour treatment to be used in the construction of the canopy and cladding - are submitted for approval.

An artist?s impression drawn up as part of the plan appears to show Sir Alex holding a ball under his right arm.

Mr Jackson sculpted the other two statues at Old Trafford and has been commissioned to craft tributes across the globe.

His works include statues of Mozart in London?s Belgravia and Empress Elisabeth of Austria in Geneva.

Mr Jackson, who is originally from Inverness, said that he was honoured to have been given the task.

He said: ?I have met Sir Alex on a number of occasions and he is a very nice chap.

?I took a lot of pictures of him and watched a lot film. You have to get to know the subject.?

Mr Jackson, 68, added that the notoriously hard-to-please manager had already given the piece the green light.

He added: ?He came down to see the clay sculpture and he seemed very pleased.?

A spokesman for United said: "We're delighted and we're sure this will add to the attractiveness of Old Trafford as a visitor attraction, as well as being as being an appropriate way to mark the manager's 25th anniversary at the club.

Yeah i thought it looked strange him holding a ball, would be better him kicking a liver bird off its perch or holding a Premier League Trophy.

Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'.

Personally i think the ref got the 2 sendings off right ivanovic was unlucky but caught his legs he was caught and young got in between him and ball

second one yes there was minimal contact but torres blatantly threw himself to the floor from where the ref was he couldnt possibly see the contact but could see torres throw himself to ground

chicharito was definately offside but absolutely impossible for linesman to see as when the ball came to him he was on and you cant see a ball being kicked and the player it goes too at exactly the same

Great 3 points at the end of the day will take 3 points away to chelsea any day of the week

but a little disapointed with the way we struggled to get a hold on the game after 30min and i also thought we were very wasteful when they went to 9 men i was actually worried they would score. they should have been taken to the cleaners and our GD should have been boosted better

thought manager should of took young off earlier he looked leggy and i thought he should of took carrick off and kept cleverly on as he looked the more lively

got to give chelsea a bit of credit though even with 9 they had oppurtunities, but a wins a win and were definately in the hunt
