      United hold Tevez talks

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed that Carlos Tevez has been offered a permanent deal at Old Trafford.

The Argentina star's two-year loan with the defending Premier League and European champions is due to expire at the end of the season and he has been linked with a move to Chelsea, Liverpool or Manchester City.

But Ferguson has always maintained that he is keen to keep the 25-year-old in his attacking armoury, and the Scot has stated that chief executive David Gill is working to push a deal through.

After watching substitute Tevez - who is owned by Media Sports Investment - score United's equaliser as they came from behind to win 2-1 at Wigan on Wednesday, the Red Devils boss has said that the forward has been offered terms.

"He is a fantastic little player. He knows I want him to stay," Ferguson told Sky Sports 1 when asked about the former West Ham player, who has been rumoured to be unhappy with a lack of first-team football with the Red Devils.

                    manu 0 arsenal 0

ALEX FERGUSON sealed his 11th Premier League title as Manchester United boss ? but old foe Arsene Wenger pushed him all the way.

The Arsenal boss sent his men on a mission to wreck the Old Trafford party, with a late assault forcing the legendary Scotsman to sweat to the very end.

But United held on for a 0-0 draw, earning the point needed to see them crowned champions for the 18th time in their illustrious history.

By scooping the silverware with one game to spare, Fergie earned his squad some breathing space ahead of their Champions League final against Barcelona on May 27.

And the importance of completing domestic duty was not lost on him, calling the stalemate ?the longest 90 minutes in history? after the final whistle.

Going into the game, Fergie opted for Carlos Tevez up top ? with the striker's future at the club yet to be resolved.

Dimitar Berbatov was dropped, with Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs replacing Anderson and Paul Scholes from the side that beat Wigan.

The Gunners were without injured duo Manuel Almunia and Emmanuel Adebayor, with Andrey Arshavin returning after a bout of flu.

And it was Fletcher who opened up the Arsenal defence in the first minute, playing in Cristiano Ronaldo who failed to produce a goal-scoring chance.

Tevez was hassling the defenders in front of him, prompting early chants from the Old Trafford faithful to sign the Argentine permanently.

But the best early chance fell to Robin van Persie, who fluffed his free header after Arshavin had picked him out with a fine far-post cross.

Van Persie then thought he should have had a penalty when he went down under Nemanja Vidic?s challenge but referee Mike Dean disagreed.

The Dutchman was also booked for a late tackle before coming close, prodding the ball at Vidic when he could have tested Edwin van der Sar.

Arshavin was booked for a late tackle on Michael Carrick, before a handball decision against Samir Nasri saw Ronaldo fire a free kick wide on the stroke of half-time.

Things got spicy at the start of the second period, with Patrice Evra taking exception to a tackle from Cesc Fabregas that left him hobbling.

Moments later, ref Dean had to step in and cool tempers after a collision between Evra and Van Persie before Nasri was booked for a foul on the Frenchman.

Fletcher put in Tevez for a great chance shortly after, with Lukasz Fabianski blocking him out.

The ball fell to Ronaldo, but his follow-up ended up in row Z of the Stretford End.

On 67 minutes, Tevez was replaced by Park Ji Sung, with the Argentine waving to all four corners of the ground in an apparent farewell.

Wenger introduced Nicolas Bendtner and Theo Walcott for Nasri and Arshavin, but could have seen his side go behind when Ronaldo was harshly flagged offside as he strode onto Park?s through ball.

But Arsenal launched a late assault on the United goal, with Fabregas on the edge of the area smashing the post with his angled drive.

Van Persie then had a shot saved by fellow Dutchman van der Sar as United retreated further into their shell, eventually emerging, arms aloft in triumph, at the final whistle.

Wenger warned United that the Gunners will bounce back stronger next season.

He said: ?Deep down I wish it was us not Manchester United.

?But that is sport. They were the better team this year, so congratulations to them.

?We have to make sure that it is on our side next year.

?Things can change quickly but what we have seen today shows we have the quality to be up there.

"We have to keep believing in these players and work hard.

?They have learned a lot this year.?

Man Utd: Van der Sar, O?Shea, Vidic, Evans, Evra, Ronaldo, Fletcher, Carrick, Giggs, Rooney (Anderson 90), Tevez (Park 67). Subs not used: Kuszczak, Neville, Berbatov, Scholes, Rafael Da Silva.

Arsenal: Fabianski, Sagna, Toure, Song, Gibbs (Eboue 76), Nasri (Bendtner 69), Denilson, Diaby, Fabregas, Arshavin (Walcott 69), van Persie. Subs not used: Mannone, Vela, Ramsey, Silvestre. Booked: van Persie, Arshavin, Fabregas, Nasri, Song Billong.

                    Att: 75,468

                    Ref: Mike Dean (Wirral).

ferguson already eyeing up title no.19

ALEX FERGUSON glossed over Manchester United's record-equalling title triumph - by turning his attention to next season.

United matched Liverpool's 18 top-flight titles by picking up the point they needed against Arsenal to see off the Kop's challenge.

But Ferguson, winning his 11th Premier League, insisted passing Liverpool by making it 19 next year would be even sweeter.

He said: ?I am already thinking about next year. You have to do it here. There is nothing else for it, you just drive on.

"It would be more special if we were to get in front of Liverpool.

"And that is the great challenge now - to try to win it next year because that would be something special.

"It would be a 19th league title and give us a special place in the club?s history.

"That was the target - to get past Liverpool. They were the greatest team in the land. But I never imagined we would get 11 titles, never in a million years.

"Liverpool's players have done really well. It was a great challenge from them.

?But we have a great side, a great squad. I could have picked two teams today. It?s not easy.?

Fergie, 67, also revealed he has no plans to retire.

He said: ?I?m not contemplating it, I?ll carry on. I?m going to stay as a manager and my health will tell me when to retire.

                        matches that won the title

FERGIE'S flyers set the Old Trafford crowd alight when they won their 18th top-flight title at home to Arsenal.

Here, SunSport highlights six key matches on United's road to glory.

They were in the bottom half early in the season before surging through the field to claim the top spot.

Great games, great goals ? here are the magnificent milestones that saw the Red Devils' seal the title.

                        September 21 2008: Chelsea 1 United 1

United bounced back from a 2-1 defeat at Liverpool to rebuild their confidence with a battling point at Stamford Bridge. Ji-Sung Park put the Red Devils ahead on 18 minutes after Peter Cech had spilled the ball from a Dimitar Berbatov shot. United held on until ten minutes from the end, when sub Salomon Kalou headed home the equaliser.

                        United?s position: 14th

                        December 26, 2008: Stoke City 0 United 1

This was the match singled out by Fergie as the turning point in the title campaign ? the start of an 11-game winning run. It was United?s first league match for 13 days after their trip to Japan, where they won the World Club Championship. Stoke were causing problems for the newly-crowned world's best team until Carlos Tevez cracked an 83rd-minute winner from Dimitar Berbatov?s pass.

                        United?s position: 3rd

                        January 11 2009: United 3 Chelsea 0

United were three games into that 11-match winning run when they hammered Chelsea with goals from Nemanja Vidic, Rooney and Berbatov. After this Sunday treat, they went on to beat Wigan 1-0 at home four days later and then Bolton 1-0 away the following Saturday to crank up the pressure on their title rivals.

                        United?s position: 3rd

                        April 5 2009: United 3 Villa 2

Teen wonder Federico Macheda struck in the 93rd minute to put United back on track after their title hopes had been rocked by defeats at home to Liverpool and away to Fulham. Macheda, 17, broke the stalemate with a spectacular effort after Ronaldo scored twice for United either side of goals from John Carew and Gabriel Agbonlahor.

                        United?s position: 1st

                        April 25 2009: United 5 Tottenham 2

United punished Spurs for taking a two-goal half time lead by storming back for a sensational victory which took them three points clear of Liverpool at the top. Darren Bent and Luka Modric silenced Old Trafford, but the second half was one-way traffic with Rooney and Ronaldo grabbing two each and Berbatov adding the fifth.

                        United?s position: 1st

                        May 13 2009: Wigan 1 United 2

Carlos Tevez had United fans singing in the rain as he turned this match round to leave Ferguson's men on the brink of the title. Hugo Rodallega bustled past Vidic to put Wigan ahead with a controversial goal on 28 minutes. But sub Tevez levelled by flicking the ball home with his back to goal before Michael Carrick blasted the winner.

                        United?s position: 1st

                            fergies greatest eleven ever

ALEX FERGUSON sealed his place as the greatest manager in British football history by leading Manchester United to a record-equalling 18th league championship.

The Scottish manager has steered the Red Devils to 11 titles under his stewardship and has produced some of the best club sides ever.

And now, to celebrate the 67-year-old's remarkable legacy, SunSport has put together the best eleven players we think have had the biggest impact during his time as boss.

The players listed had to have been signed by Fergie, or brought through the United youth system during his time at the club.

                            Goalkeeper:Peter Schmeichel

Had a poor start to the 1998-9 season and Fergie gave him a two-week midwinter sunshine break.

Came back with a vengeance and a string of crucial, heart-stopping saves followed ? none more important than the 92nd-minute Dennis Bergkamp penalty he blocked in the 1999 FA Cup semi-final replay. Ryan Giggs scored the hairy-chest wonder goal and United went on to do the Treble.

                            Right-back: Gary Neville

Under-rated grafter whose marauding runs down the right wing have gone largely unnoticed over the years. Particularly in the second half of the 90s, he offered United pace, rock-solid determination and steel.

The way Neville bombed down the flanks and went on overlapping runs cutting defences to shreds was key to United's title triumphs.

Jose Antonio Reyes' Arsenal career was effectively ended ? as was the Invincibles' run of 49 games ? after he got the full Gary Neville treatment at Old Trafford in October 2004.

                            Centre-back: Rio Ferdinand

The most expensive centre-half in the history of British football has lived up to his ?30million price-tag as he helped Ferguson forget Gary Pallister.

Dead calm on the ball but has never been shy of lumping it when necessary. Prone to high-profile clangers like the notorious nine-month ban for 'forgetting' to take a drugs test and leaving the training ground to go shopping.

                            Centre-back: Nemanja Vidic

Serb destroyer came in to form a great partnership with Rio that made fans forget the Gary Pallister-Steve Bruce connection.

Giant bruiser gave Ferguson a massive aerial presence as well as bone-crunching authority.

But his nightmare against Fernando Torres in the 1-4 routing by Liverpool at Old Trafford cost him this season's PFA Footballer of the Year award.

                            Left-back: Denis Irwin

Who would have thought that the best left-back in United's history was actually right-footed? Yet the Irish international never looked out of place and he was Mr Consistent.

Irwin slotted in quietly in a star-studded United team and even though he had limited talent his work-rate and appetite for the game allowed him a trophy-laden career at one of the world's great clubs.

                            Right midfield: Cristiano Ronaldo

Wonderfully talented, supremely gifted, terrifically athletic, dashing Portu-geezer could rightly be considered Ferguson's greatest-ever signing.

Yet critics brand him a flawed genius with some justification. As good as he is, in equal measure he can also be a petulant, petty, poser.

But he's the only man in United's illustrious history to be voted World Player of the Year after scoring 42 goals and leading them to a European Cup and League double last season. Enough said.

                            Central midfield: Paul Scholes

It's no coincidence United's renaissance in the last couple of years has coincided with Scholesy's return to action after a long absence with a mystery eye problem.

Formed a formidable central midfield pairing with Roy Keane.

As gifted a player as Nicky Butt was, he couldn't get a game and finally left United before his prime. Sums up how good Scholes is.

                            Central midfield: Roy Keane

People remember him for his thuggish behaviour ? Alf Inge Haalland in particular will be haunted by the Irishman whom he accused of ending his career with a criminal tackle in a derby with Manchester City.

His hounding of referee Andy D'Urso for rightly awarding a penalty to Middlesbrough with his veins bulging with hatred shocked the nation.

But I also remember the lightning-quick 50-yard box-to-box runs that won United games as well as the header that signalled their comeback in Turin in the 1999 European Cup semi-final against Juventus.

A terrific midfield destroyer and one of the best captains in English football history.

                            Left midfield: Ryan Giggs

The greatest player in Manchester United's history.

Not easy to put these words next to anyone's name but the Welsh wizard is head and shoulders above any other United man.

He has charisma, class, poise, panache, pizzazz and power. His winner in the 1999 FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal was poetry in motion ? and the hairy-chest celebration as he waved his shirt above his head truly unforgettable.

Had the looks AND the world-class talent but, unlike others less gifted than him who are prone to hogging the limelight, Giggsy chose to stay true to football.

And that's why he stayed the course. He has won more honours than ANY other United player. A true gent who finally got his reward by being named PFA Footballer of the Year this season.

                            Centre forward: Eric Cantona

Will be haunted for ever by his mad kung-fu kick against his Crystal Palace abuser one sad night in 1995.

But he will also be remembered for his comeback goal from the spot in a 2-2 draw against Liverpool after a nine-month ban and his sliding-pole celebration behind the goal.

It signalled United's surge in the league as they overhauled a 12-point deficit to pip Newcastle to the title.

Apart from scoring vital goals in that campaign, he also provided the killer assist for Andy Cole's winner at St James' Park that floored the Magpies. Magnifique.

                            Centre forward: Ruud van Nistelrooy

The Dutch goal-machine banged 44 goals in his first season and 36 in his second. It wasn't just the numbers, it was his reliability and lethal poise that left rival defences quaking in his wake.

Too strong a personality and like fellow Dutchman Jaap Stam was shipped out of Old Trafford when still in his prime after falling out with Ferguson.

United haven't found a 30-goals-a-season striker since he left despite splashing ?31m on Dimitar Berbatov as well as signing Carlos Tevez for a ?10m two-year loan. That says it all.

                            Substitutes:

GK: Edwin van der Sar: Broke the all-time record for consecutive clean sheets this season.

D: Gary Pallister: Solid bedrock in the earlier glory years of Fergie at Old Trafford.

D: Steve Bruce: His last-minute goal at Sheffield Wednesday in 1993 changed United?s history.

M: Nicky Butt: Immaculate product of the United youth team unlucky to be in Scholes? shadow.

M: Paul Ince: Embodied United?s determination to win trophies and drove them forward.

F: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Super-sub banged last-gasp jaw-dropping winner against Bayern Munich in Barcelona.

F: Wayne Rooney: Has sacrificed himself selflessly over the years for the good of the team. Greatness b

In a season where Liverpool have

                                Beaten Manchester United 2-1
                                Beaten Everton away 2-0
Beaten Manchester City 3-2, after being 2 goals down..
Beaten Chelsea at their own ground, ending their home run, 1-0
Beating them again 2-0 later on in the season
Getting last gasp winners to beat Pompey, after they looked down and out..
                                Beating Real Madrid away 1-0
Beating them again, this time 4-0
Coming to Manchester United, and winning 4-1
                                Beaten Aston Villa 5-0

All these impressive results, and what have they got to show for it? not even a Carling Cup, not even a sniff of any final at all
