If you have by accident upgraded to 4.2 and were previously jailbroken or you saved your shsh blobs via tiny umbrella (most recommended) then just downgrade to a previous version firmware (4.1 etc) and jailbreak again for an untethered lock. Why wait for 4.2 to be fixed?

old info mate,i havent upgraded to 4.2 im 4.1 and jb
my stepson has been given an i phone thats on 4.2 was regularly updated by the previous owner,he wants me to jb it so i was simply asking if thatre was an untethered jb for 4.2.1

Good for you that your iphone is on 4.1 and jailbroken, you have done the correct thing and not updated via itunes. As for your stepsons phone that is on 4.2, have you checked that the shsh is stored for that phone?
What I post is maybe "old info" but certainly helps others in the same situation.

I read today that Chronic Dev-Team are releasing unteather imminently - apparently working on last remaining issue to do with wi-fi icon then it's done...

keep in mind that you require 4.2.1 beta 3 blobs to do the untehtered jailbreak, and its pretty buggy. So this would only help people that went through the beta testing process of the 4.2.1.

To SOGARO who is crying out for a safe unlock on baseband 2.10.04 you need to wait...Hopefully Geohot is NOT just grandstanding and has a working Untethered jailbreak with an Unlock for those who need it..
According to MuscleNerd a major mover in the Jailbreak world there will be no UNlock till firmware 4.2.5 or 4.3 whichever is last

Remember the 4.2.1 firmware is primarily for the iPad users...it gave nothing of value to the iPhone. All tweaks gained on the iPhone by upgrading to 4.2.1 can be reproduced via Cydia safely on 4.1FW
