    Have you got the latest version of the kernel software (1.64b) on the micro sd card?

    And have you tried upgrading as in this picture?

        Managed to sort this out you need the update 1.56b(this would not work on my ds) but I noticed the flash.r4i file was bigger than on update 1.64b( this update would work on the ds but didn't give a firmware update option). So I copied the flash.r4i file from 1.56b and overwrote the 1.64b version and it then allowed the DS to update to 1.44e and it now it all works on my freinds DSI as well!
