Easiest way to mod your PS3 to play backups [Tutorial]
Few questions..
* Can you get caught and banned for doing this?
* If you play the campaign of a backed up game and then update firmware and lose the ability to play that game again do your saves and trophies remain?

You'll need the official ps3 3.55 firmware. (big download 180mb or thereabouts)
Kmeaws 3.55 firmware patch (35mb or thereabouts)
BSDIFF.exe and BSPATCH.exe (under a meg of both) to combine both files into a single custom firmware .pup
And something to check CRC and MD5 hashes to confirm things are real and to avoid bricking.

1: possibly, I've not personally heard of anyone being banned and I keep my ear to the ground regarding this matter. I did receive an E-Mail from Sony though:
Important: Access to the PlayStation(R)Network and Access to Qriocity(TM) Services Notice
Unauthorized circumvention devices for PlayStation(R)3 system have been recently released by hackers for the PlayStation(R)3 system. These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software.
Use of such devices or software violates the terms of your ?System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation(R)3 System? and the ?Terms of Services and User Agreement? for the PlayStation(R)Network/Qriocity(TM) and its Community Code of Conduct provisions. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws.
A circumvention device and/or unauthorized or pirated software currently resides on your PlayStation(R)3 system.
Immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from your PlayStation(R)3 system. Failure to do so will result in termination of your access to PlayStation(R) Network and access to Qriocity(TM) services through your PlayStation(R)3 system.
That being said I've never actually connected to the PSN with a hacked unit so I have no idea what the hell that's all about, figuring its more of a scare tactic than any real form of detection.
The mod is generally offline only, that is to say there are ways to enable online play but there's a lot of hoops to jump through and absolutely no guarantee of safety by doing so.
2: yes. Trophy information is held on Sonys servers, tied to your account, so long as your account is active trophies will remain.
