if its not reading, you need to adjust the laser height. take the drive apart, and look just on side of laser, facing towards the back of the drive, theres two small grub screws, turn the one on the left a millimetre to the left and 9 times out of 10, the drive will work like new. simplest and easiest fix usually.

and if the drives jamming, disassemble the drive and put a small bit of insulation tape (cut to size) over the small magnet in the centre of the drive (in the centre of where the disk sits, and dont forget to make a small hole in the middle of the tape.Comment

Read above about cleaning and adjusting, google xbox laser adjustment and there are tuts on there with pictures of how to adjust your laser, try cleaning laser first.
