    RROD again

I recently bought a Xbox 360 with the RROD. On inspection the X clamps had been removed and a fix was inplace. I follwoed the tutorial below:-

Llamma's Xbox 360 3RLOD (three red light error) X-Clamp Fix

which managed to fix the problem however only after a week the Xbox starts up and after a few minutes it freezes and the red ring comes back. I am going to atempt to do it all over again however I wanted to know if there is anything else I can do to improve my success rate.

One thing that stands out is I removed those 4 thermal pads when doing the fix, are these necessary. I was also thinking that if the box is upright is it more susceptible to RROD due to gravity.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

I had the fan out over the CPU which was being cooled while the GPU was overheating.

i just leave the fan off and let it over heat
i then unplug the power cable as the power button does not work hen overheated
        never failed yet
also did u use a hight temp artic silver paste as well ?

        as for
I was also thinking that if the box is upright is it more susceptible to RROD due to gravity.

not sure why you are thinking this
but look at it this way....
RROD is normally an overheating issue
if the box is upright thee is more surface area being shown to fresh air than it would be if it was flat

yes i know there are vents at the sides but there is no fan at the sides its at the rear...so personally i dont think it is an issue with it being upright

Nearly all RRODs can be fixed with the clamp fix and overheat method but I've had a few RRODs that would work for a few weeks after the repair then RROD again, the only way I could get them to behave was to reflow the boards properly with a heat gun.

Thanks for that, is reflow the boards properly with a heat gun a complicated task?

No mate, you just remove the board from the case, protect any plastic surfaces then zap the ~~~~er with around 350 degrees centigrade, I use 600 degrees to make sure EVERYTHING gets reflowed, but at the temperatures I use you need to be very carefull as you can pop the capacitors in seconds.

Ok this is encouraging, I will get the hight temp artic silver paste as asvised by Ricky and redo the whole board.

Can advise me of a heat gun and I am assuming that you are only heating the bottom the board and for what duration?

                Thanks.

Try and get a gun that has variable heat settings, failing that look for one that does 350 and 500 or higher.

I use a Ryobi gun which has 60 and 600, the 60 setting is ok for drying your hair, the 600 would remove you head

Have a look on Youtube mate, there are loads of reflow tutorials, but remember to take note of the heat of their gun and compare it to your own, if their gun is lowered powered than yours then you would need to use less time than they would otherwise you'll find that components start falling off the board

used the hat gun myself on a persistant rrod
and if your really carefull it should help sort it but i would defo use a better artic silver paste first
make sure you cover the chips with a thin layer
leave the fan off untill it overheats and let it cool down for 10 to 15 mins before you attempt to see if its sorted......

ive only ever had 1 rrod that ive not been able to sort
but hey i got a spare rom and wireless board out of it

Are the thermal pads on the bottom important, I stupidly removed then and threw they away

The thermal pads on the RAM beneath the board?

                        Yes, they are very important.

Though I've had a few boxes that didn't have any installed from the factory.

@ Ricky_uk1, I agree, you can't beat a good layer of Artic Silver, I use AS-450 on my boards.

                          Guys

Thanks for all your input, been meaning to thank you all for a while but not sure where Dk went.

Got myself a heat gun and Arctic silver thermal paste and did the board over the weekend and all seems to be working well so far.

I have a heatgunning guide on pdf if anyone would like it.

                          Thanks again guys.
