In the xbox I put the activate disc in then that shows up. Does this mean it works?

Yep then eject disc from console and put wave 4 game in xbox

I used world cup 2010 but that said it was a 'mixed media disc' why would this be?

Your dvd drive in the xbox needs updated with the latest firmware.
It needs to be flashed with 1.6 or later in order to use boot disk.
