need help choosing xbox 360 console

hi guys sorry if this has been covered before but im thinking of getting a gaming console because nights out have been replaced by night in since the little fella was born
and i was visiting at christmas and got hooked on call of duty 4 with the mate was playing it on a pc and thought it was deadly reminded me of the younger days as a teen

ive almost set my mind on a 360 as from what ive been reading ya can copy games and stuff which works out better than the ps3 thats all i really want at the moment but is there other handy things ya can do with the 360 that might interest the missus

also whats the best version to buy ie hard drive size and other things to look for and when im flashing it or whatever the technical term is for it can i do it on my laptop does it need a certain system to allow me do it also is there special cables or something to do it or is it by usb

any info will be much appreciated and anything i learn will be given back to other newbies in this section just like i did in the cable section

    OK

Xbox arcade - 512mb built in memory unit.
Pro version - 60gb Hard drive
    Elite - 120gb Hard drive
Super Elite - 250gb Hard drive.

All the same unit other than the memory units supplied. So if you want to use live, you will need an hard drive, you can buy an arcade and add a Hard drive at a later date. They come in 20, 60, 120 and 250gb now, I saw 1 in CEX for ?45 (120gb) and thought that was cheap considering that a 20gb is about ?20 on flea bay.

As for copying/flashing the console i would wait and see if you go down the 360 route/pre owned or new so you will know EXACTLY your up against if your gonna do it yourself.

Best of luck to you and if you need help, post us a question down here and myself or someone else will help you out.

going live isnt really an option for me i dont think
i live in the country an only have o2 broadband and probably isnt good enough

on the hard drive issue when i save a game after playing i probably need a certain size hard drive so il probably get one with a 60 gig should be enough

is there much of an issue buying new or secondhand ones any good sites to buy off

i would recomend the xbox elite 120gb you say the misses might be interested in some of the stuff ie downloading movies bbc iplayer etc so you might need some decent memory.

well i have an external hard drive for the laptop so any films we download goes on that and just hook the laptop to the telly but thanks anyway

if i do get one is there much to do to getting them going have been reading lots of random posts today probably the worst thing to do but it sounds confusing with all the new terminology and stuff

You mentioned flashing in your original post. Bear in mind that if you choose to buy a new x360 console chances are it will have a new lite-on drive which is not currently dumpable (well...not easily anyway) so if you are thinking of flashing the drive you would be better off buying a used console. I have bought two or three from ebay lately and provided you are careful to ensure you are buying a quality box then you should be OK.

i think the new elites are very very difficult to flash whereas the older drives like the samsungs are very easy to flash,

mate if ur buying a box 2 mod , then 1 u might aswell get a cheap 1 uncase it gets banned , 2 ,the older drives are easier 2 flash , no soldering or probe needed

go 2 gamestation or game and buy there cheapest preowned console for just 80?

if u buy cheapest u will get a old core system with Hiatchi drive or Sammy if ur lucky

u will find that 80% of preowned consoles sold in game and gamestation are refurbished units , the past 2 i have purchessed had repair stickers on inside case

it will cost 80? for a refurnished preowned Hitachi drive
u still get a years warranty and is ur best bet if u want 2 mod
also if it gets banned it doesn't matter as 80? for a new system again is far cheaper than buying games

i would rather replace my box 1ce a year and risk ban than pay 40? per game

you just gotta watch out for RROD problems or where someones had a go at doing a DIY x-clamp repair.

your better off buying from a retailer so u get a warranty

like drawflex said red ring of death has been a major problem over the years with 360

at least all refurnished and pre owned sold at a retailer u get same warranty as u would with a new one

buying from classified ads can be very risky with 360s , as there are that many out there that are banned or suffer with red ring
if its banned Microsoft also wont repair
