ok update just got back from the hardware shop now added metal washers to the bundle.
So it now goes as follows: nylon washer, metal washer, motherboard, nylon washer and metal washer.
Needless to say once put together and turned on all I get now is two lights flashing which means "overheating" because of this the xbox turns its self off after 5 seconds and nothing is achieved
I think it is because there is now to much of a gap between the chip and the heat sink.
God knows any one shed some light on this for me?

ok another update I have decided to go with the heat gun technique. Now after watching a tut on line saying take off your heat sink and DVD and so on just motherboard. So i done that then the guy says get your heat gun and heat up the underneath of the chips for 4 minuets. So I did the flip over the MB and do the same on the other side. but by minuet 3 on the second side I started to smell burning so I stopped and god only knows what I have done now as it smelled like burning the motherboard sounded like a bowl of snap crackle and pop its now cooling. I have run out of heat sink paste. So what is left on the chips is all I have so lets hope that will do. Once cooled I will used just the metal washers but will these short out on the motherboard and cause a hazard? otherwise I am going to use them as I don't think it will work with nylon washers and metal as well I think its over kill?

, you need to give it someone who knows what there doing. you don't need to heat it for that long with the heat gun.

i think its ****ed now mate, not sure tho.

On the x clamps I only used one small metal washer on the underside of the board and re-pasted the chips. The other with e74 error i just waved the heatgun over the back of the board near the gpu for a couple of minutes and not in just one place. Both box's done a couple of months ago and both still going fine.

                Smell of burning not good!!!!!

Hope you get ALL of them sorted soon!!!

i got a rrod death kit, stripped xbox down and cleaned heatsinks, put new paste on them, changed xclamps for screws and washers, switched on with fan unplugged until 3 lights changed to 2, let it cool and still got 3 lights, took motherboard back out and loosened screws half a turn each and put it back together and its been working fine since. good luck with yours

so I brought a new xbox 360 on line. The guy was selling cheap as it freezes sometimes. No problem I think due to the fact that i am now an x-clap fixing master
                    WRONG!!!!
was playing the new console but it started to freeze so me thinks time to change x-clamps for bolts and bingo bango we have a good a new console once again
                    WRONG!!
once i replaced the x-clamps and cleaned the chips i put it all back together now I'm getting three RED lights the same thing as my last console. Unplugged the fan left for 15 mins until only two lights were flashing let it cool plugged all in again and still nothing now this is the second console to die in the same way as the first or am I doing something very wrong here??
Please don't just say buy a new console because i don't believe that is the answer I mean when you look on youtube and see like 1000 videos of people fixing their xbox's and comments saying things like "thanks mine lives again thanks to you" there must be something that I am doing wrong????
Please help guys if you want I can make a small vid of what the hell it is I am doing and upload this to Youtube?
Yes please do it'd be hilarious

I tried the "hybrid fix" on my nephew's Xbox, no re-flow, bout 4-5 months back and he's had no problem's yet. Now I don't know how often he use's it. Reading here, should I tell him to expect it to go tit's up in the near future.

rrod is not an x clamp error, on the back of the motherboard there are 4 thermal pads stuck to the back of 4 chips, it is these thermal pads that fail after time that cause rrod, e74 error is caused buy heatsink (thermal paste) failure on the grapics chips, to fix rrod then remove the pads and replace with 2x1 pence's wraped in electrical tape per chip, clean the glue off the chip from the pads and stick the pennies to the chip with heatsink(paste) then overheat to reset your xbox and the problem is fixed, when doing te e74/xclamp fix be sure to overheat the xbox aswell to make sure there is a good fresh bond between your chip and heatsink otherwise the error e74 will keep coming back
