Increase Bandwidth By 20%


A nice little tweak for XP and Vista.
Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..)

Here's how to get it back:

Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without the "


This opens the group policy editor. Then go to
Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth


Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :
"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."


So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO.


This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.


Note : Works on Vista Ultimate, XP Pro, 2000 but other o/s not tested.

This comes up every so often but its an erroneous pre-conception. NT based OS's DO NOT steal 20% of your bandwidth !

What they do is reserve UPTO 20% for datapackets that need high priority or realtime transfer (such as voip) but it only gets reserved when those protocols that need it are actually in use and only the amount actually needed is reserved (upto the maximum 20%). The rest of the time the FULL bandwidth is available to all protocols.

By altering this setting you effectively destroy your machines ability to prioritise data packets which means applications like skype etc may see voice/video quality issues.

btw, unless you have internet speeds of over 80Mbit/sec then this setting cant possibly have any effect on your internet speed (remember, as far as your network card is concerned your 'card' speed will be either 100Mbit/sec or 1Gbit/sec and its this speed the setting works on, not your actual internet bandwidth).

yeah, when the connection is maxed out, your tweak can do more harm than good as the computer's really important packets get choked up with everthing else.

Hmmm...I read this someplace a while back and tried it.
It seem to spped up my I mB netconnect somewhat, so left it it like this.( I can dl at certain times around 125kbps )
On this PC I don't use any Voip, etc stuff so never had a problem.
Can't be bother to reverse it for fear that I may losse speed

that's normal ... i used to have a 8mb download and 1mb upload ...

however it appeared on a regular basis to download and upload over those speeds
