    Noob with noob question

Hi there guys n gals. So a friend of mine referred me here (don't think he's active here anymore) anyways I have questions regarding the recent goings on in internetland.

Seeing as Virgin Media (and others) have been ordered to block access to The Pirate Bay and now the government wants to push through the blocking of p0rn sites I'm getting a little uncomfortable at the level of control they wish to extert on my internet browsing.

Now I do very little with torrents and avoid filth like the plague (viruses and what not) but still I wonder where this will end up. I've seen VPN's mentioned a few times.

I understand what VPN's are and how they work but I don't really know if it is actually worth paying for one. I have seen some that say they have high bandwidth allowances. How does this affect my current broadband package if I chose to get a VPN account?

I currently have an "unlimited" internet deal with Virgin. If I were to pay for a VPN would it be worth dropping my speeds to cover the costs or does it not work like that?

Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I do worry about ~~~~ and torrents so I go here https://tpb.pirateparty.org.uk
But if you dont have any worries then why bother with VPN or the like.

Lol, I already know a number of ways around this kind of blocking.

I just really wanted more info on how VPN's affect bandwidth.

From my own "investigations" it seems they aren't really worth the extra cost. It just stoked my curiosity a little. I get the general gyst of it.

Personally I don't use tpb much. I prefer a few others.

I'm still not keen on where the government are going with all this attempted internet control. Changing p0rn to opt in rather than opt out isn't an issue to me either; but if it becomes a success then will the government seek to build on that and block something else? What's next on the firing line?

It's just that VPN's have been touted recently. I mean are they really worth the money for protecting yourself online?

What are your opinions on these new rules being pushed out?

yea, I've checked them out. I was just generally introducing myself and asking a couple of questions.

Oh and really they should move that Man United smiley . I'm an Evertonian.
