    One more thing

Something you may not be aware of is that Windows 8 is the first step into Online OS's. They (MS) started with "Cloud" systems and are moving into "Cloud OS's" where we all have to use their system to "Network" with the rest of the world and they Own all the Data that you use on their OS system. This way they can keep track of what we do and we cann't do anything about it.

I know this because up untill a year ago I worked for HP and Helped setup the system for them. This in fact is their plan and they are slowly trying to force us into it.

Stay with Win 7 as long as you can and protest Win 8. Since money is the motivator, if people don't buy it they will try something else.

            It's happening

It's going to happen , believe it or not. The part about "working in the field" is not a problem for them as your "Online OS" has a limited "Off Line" capablity that will let you run programs with limited abilitys. As soon as it's connected to the internet it will phone home to it's KMS server and report in.

I'm not trying to start a fight here, I'm just pointing out a fact that I have seen and was part of for two years. I left HP in protest of these actions and could no longer be part of it.

Believe what you want, but they are trying to take over control of the Internet and your computer.

Beware of the Cloud, there is no Silver Lining.

A have to admit a guessed a while ago that this would be the eventual move from MS, it looked like it was moving when they said that Windows 8 would be the same code as their mobile devices.
It kinda answers the question of why didn't they make a tablet OS and a separate desktop OS.
Like you say its gonna come down to the end user which will be split imo.
Tablet users will like 8 as 7 is a total joke at touch but 8 will be mostly disliked on the desktop. (although i have saw reviews last week from desktop users saying they like 8)

Being a long time desktop user it really pi**** me off that we are going down this route of a dumb OS where Windows etc control your OS.
We know that Windows in the past have dialed home but this will take that to a new level, its sad that the majority of users in zombie land wont really care and will see this as a good thing.

A think MS might have made a blunder though, they are throwing 8 at a market that they have no say in.
The usual MS approach is to flood the market at a much cheaper price with a product that sort of works or sometimes its simply broken.
They have done this in a market where there are only a couple of players, they wont get away with the same thing in the touch market, if their software sucks it will fail..

                    Only Way

Only way to stop then is to NOT buy this stuff. The pocket book is the only thing they understand.

When it was said that we should use other OS's , remember that Microsoft has 60% of Apple and runs that operation from behind closed doors. So I guess only us nerds will know how to be free of big brother.

Everything in the computer world is a circle jerk. Every new OS and the programs for them are just bloated crap that make your $3000 computer useless two years after you bought it. I'll wait for windows 9. It would be windows 8 with all the crap taken out just like win7 was vista.

                              Real apple owner

Microsoft picked up the majority of apple shares 4yrs ago. Apple was about to go under and MS stepped in to keep them alive. B Gates took the opertunity when S Jobs was sick and has been in control ever since. No one talks about it because they didn't want to turn off the loyal fan base. B Gates refused to deal with Texas Insturments on the price of their CPUs and changed over to IBM chipsets. I'm surprised that you didn't know this, I work with computers every day (my job) and everyone I work with is aware of this stuff.

Could you provide any links please mate, a have went through page after page on Google and can't find anything to support this.
I remember Apples stock price did take a small hit in 2008 after Jobs first public medical leave but they were far from bankrupt, their product line was strong as was their management and if they had sold that amount of stock am pretty sure Jobs would have had them burned on a stake on live television.

A know Apple and MS did come to some patent settlements recently which made sense as they would have been locked in court for eternity if they didn't but as far as i am aware MS have no official shares of Apple.
There was a deal done in 1996 when Jobs returned to Apple which is well known about, MS invested $150m to acquire 18.2 million shares of Apple stock, for roughly $8.31 per share. Microsoft confirmed that it sold all of its AAPL holdings some time ago at a healthy profit.

Since 2000 MS have taken a bit of a hammering in all markets with the exception of desktops and laptops, along came the rise of Apple and new boys Google and Facebook and all of a sudden MS look pretty second hand.
Windows 7 was a step in the right direction but that will soon be cancelled out by Windows 8 as will their strategy to port one OS on all devices.
Had Apple made iTunes exclusive to the Mac then MS may have had a fighting chance but they made iTunes available on Windows which was a master stroke when you think about it.

MS are still a massive company and will be for some time, but they don't have the same power anymore and they face major challenges by some mighty players.
Their monopoly was based on desktop pc's which will always be required to some extent in lesser numbers but its not the only market now.
The other markets are being fought out by big players that MS can't buy out like the old days and they have little market share in at present.
Ballmer has failed to acknowledge that people are enjoying their experience of tablets etc without Windows powering it, to switch to a Windows device it will need to offer the same level of quality or better.
Maybe Windows 8 will offer that to the touch market but it risks the market that MS are dominant in which is desktops and laptops, early studies have shown that most desktop users are horrified with Windows 8 so its a pretty risky gamble by MS.

If MS owned 60% of Apple then a doubt MS would go to the lengths they have in making Windows 8 a touch based OS, they would simply sit back and coin the profit in.
Instead they are banking on Windows 8 to compete with Apple head on, if they owned 60% of Apple then this would make no sense at all.
Apple are ahead of MS for the first time in history, i have never been a fan of Apple but i do respect the comeback they made when Jobs returned.
Sustaining that level of success is another matter, especially without Jobs who was a master salesman.

Jobs and Gates had a love/hate relationship right until the end and am pretty sure that if Jobs didn't need Gates then he would never have done the deal in 1996.
He done it because Apple needed help, the desktop war was over and MS had won so it was time to take Apple on a new direction that didn't have a MS monopoly.
Jobs took existing technology and made them into reliable consumer products that didn't require a degree in rocket science to operate.
He binned most of the Apple product line to concentrate on a few things only which they done very well.
As a result he turned Apple around into what it is today and a find it hard to believe that MS have a 60% share in that success...
