I would like to suggest clamav/clamwin as well, if it were not for the fact for windows users it is not the easiest to use and does not do what ppl expect.
I am not saying it is bad it just needs to get the onaccess scanner working. I actually really like since I do not like onaccess scanners. And use it also for mailservers and fileservers. And it is opensource
      For windows desktop use:
Don't use avg anymore it got very slow and bloated same as symantec and norton however those literally **** up your network system and are very hard to get rid of afterwards. What I mean with **** up is that they put themselves in between everything and the network stack.

Mcafee has for corporations some decent tools but dunno about the free ones.

Avira used to be bad a couple of years ago recently did not check.

nod is nice but not free

Avira is what I suggest at the moment for ppl but I have not used it much myself. Aka I don't like on access scanners and use clamwin only.
