No audio via headphone jack

Hi,
Got a little problem with my Dell laptop, I'm not getting any audio via the headphone jack on the side.

I get audio fine from the main speakers just not that.

If I plug a microphone into the microphone jack, it recognises that and I get a pop-up, but not for the headphones.

I've updated the standard Dell driver and that didn't work. So I've installed SRS Audio Soundbox and its still not working.

Anyone got any ideas?

As obvious as it sounds try quickly pushing the plug in and out a few times, the jack sockets are notorious for sticking and not engaging the jack properly when inserted.

Being slightly 'rough' with it can free the spring pins.

Still no joy

It must recognise something because when you plug the headphones in, it cuts off the loud speakers :/

Just really puzzled by this. Maybe its the actual jack thats faulty?

is it headphones or a headset with mic? what make and model are they, and what o/s are you running? i got a set last year and they weren't compatible with windows 7, there were no drivers available for them, they only worked on xp or vista

I've just tried a load of bog standard headphones, from the cheap crap you get on aeroplanes to Dr Dre's monster beats :/

It's running XP SP3, sorry thought I said in the OP
