Trying to keep the cost under ?100 mark. I found this on Amazon but I thought perhaps there was something better available but still fit on the same pc.

Mate, if you can stretch the cash just a wee bit more then stick one of these two in the machine and your son will be able to game and everything, that example you showed me is a piece of junk mate honestly (no disrespect).
OcUK ATI Radeon HD 6870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE Deus Ex PC Game [VX6870 1GBD5_2DHV2]
OcUK GeForce GTX 460 OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card []
Let me know how you go mate.
I have an ATI (amd) 6990 card, cost me ?530, plus all the cards ive had before this have been expensive too, so I have a wee bit of experience in this side of things, used to be that Nvidia was always best in my opinion, like a rolls royce compared to a mini, but not nowdays, either ATI (amd) or Nvidia are as good as each other.
p.s
REMEMBER TO GET THE PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS (SIZES) OF THE CARDS AND CHECK THAT THEY WILL PHYSICALLY FIT IN THE TOWER YOU HAVE !Last edited by Saltire; 14 September, 2011, 20:43.Comment

I am probably going to go for the second card as the first one looks like it might have problems fitting in the case. There are so many cards out there its really difficult to tell which is a good card and a bad card. Thanks for the info.Comment

yea mate, second one will be spot on mate, first one spot on too if you can squeeze it in, but have a wee sniff round the internet first for those cards just to see if you can beat that price, worth a google.Comment

Ye mate, forgot about the power supply for newer cards, but you might just scrape by with the 550watt one that you have although if it was me I would be looking to stick a more powerfull psu in there at sometime soon.
This is what the Nvidia website says about the psu required >>
"Thermal and Power Specs:
Maximum GPU Temperature (in C) 104
Maximum Graphics Card Power (W) 150w
Minimum System Power Requirement (W) 450w
Supplementary Power Connectors 6-pin & 6-pin"
But thats for the standard 460, your one you said you want is the OC version (factory overclocked), so thats great that its already overclocked and everything for you, but with it being overclocked it will want to use a bit more power than the standard 460, so as I say, you may just scrape by with your 550watt psu, I guess its worth a try, if its not powerfull enough then your just going to have to get a better psu or if it does work and then burns out your psu within a year or two then you'll know why,
.
Let us know mate.Comment

When I got the Corsair psu I thought I was well futureproofed. I have got a 5 year warranty on it so if its going to burn soon lets hope its in the next 12 months. What psu am I likely to need in the future?Ye mate, forgot about the power supply for newer cards, but you might just scrape by with the 550watt one that you have although if it was me I would be looking to stick a more powerfull psu in there at sometime soon.

Well it is futureproof if your only using it to power up what it can handle but if you go over that limit, either the piece of hardware wont power up or the psu would be under a lot of stress.
As for the future, it all depends in what you guys do with the pc, if your right into gaming etc and thinking about constantly upgrading graphics card etc and adding other bits n pieces of hardware too then your defo looking at wanting a 1000watt psu or even higher if your pocket can afford it, then you will defo be future proof, well at least for the life of the warranty on the psu anyways,
.
Right now I have a 1000watt coolermaster psu in mines, had it a few years now, but I am running a heavy duty graphics card for starters, so that sucks up a lot of power under load (AMD 6990), so its horses for courses depending on what your going to be doing on and with your pc.Comment

PC gaming has never appealed to me but my sons like to play COD, RWK , Black OPS and other similar games. As long as the graphics cards and the cpu etc can keep up with these games then I am happy to leave the pc alone. When the kids complain about the performance then I might think about upgrading some of the components.Well it is futureproof if your only using it to power up what it can handle but if you go over that limit, either the piece of hardware wont power up or the psu would be under a lot of stress.

for games that you mention there you really should be using a far better graphics card than even the one your thinking of buying, but thats only if you want to run the games at a very high resolution (excellent, nice and smooth graphics at high speed), but if the kids are happy to reduce all those lovely in game graphic effects etc and you are too then no need to worry about a very expensive card at all.PC gaming has never appealed to me but my sons like to play COD, RWK , Black OPS and other similar games. The kids are using 17" VGA TFT monitor at the moment so after the card that will be the next thing to get upgraded.for games that you mention there you really should be using a far better graphics card than even the one your thinking of buying, but thats only if you want to run the games at a very high resolution (excellent, nice and smooth graphics at high speed), but if the kids are happy to reduce all those lovely in game graphic effects etc and you are too then no need to worry about a very expensive card at all.Comment
