        i have seen numerous people having problems with routers not connecting in the last few months and they have had to buy a new one,would the lan cable you tried been faulty?

        can you try the laptop some other place to see if it picks up other wireless connections in your area.

          Try it direct and see, it at least eliminates the router if its still not working.

          No point doing a format if the modem gives you a connection.

            Try unistalling and re-installing the drivers for the WiFi

                ive tried restarting the router and modem ive uninstalled and reinstalled the adapters but still the same.

                im running windows 7
                Is this a new laptop on your network, did you have internet connection before with the same OS that is running now?

                All I think of is that;
                your Internet provider has limited amount of ip addresses
                corrupted OS install
                a Virus which prevents you connecting

                  I think this choice must try first...if the problem still happen and then you clean install windows
