USB not recognised

Hi,

I seem to have lost connectivity to 2 of my USB ports. I'm running XP Pro. I've looked in control panel/Device manager but there aren't any yellow question marks against any of the USB controllers.

Any Ideas,

Is it the front ports or the rear ports?

If its the front ports, these have a tendancy to break. If you know anough about computers to remove the side of the case give this a go:

!!! MAKE SURE THE POWER IS DISCONNECTED BEFORE DOING THIS!!!!
Open the case and track down where the rear of your USB ports are. there should be a cable running from these (sometimes there are a few cables, some are for the power button and LED etc if they are close to the ports).

It should trace back to your motherboard and should plug into a section labeled USB1 or FRONT USB or something similar.
Make sure these are plugged in properly and havent fallen out.

I think that would be a little drastic if the OP has only lost 2 of his ports.
If the failing ones are on the front/top of the case and they are plugged in to the motherboard, there's a few possibilities...
- as mentioned, cable to ports has come unplugged from motherboard
- cable-motherboard is not one plug, but 9 single connectors and they are in the wrong order
- cable to ports had been damaged somehow
- bad soldering where they mount to their board. Front off, remove a couple of screws and the connecting cable, carefully re-solder. Replacement is reversal of removal.
My guess is the solder... seen a couple of these in the past where sticks or plugs get kicked, snagged or generally yanked.
