Well it seems error is caused by S.M.A.R.T monitoring on the drive itself. Perhaps you can verify the S.M.A.R.T error by using manufacturers diagnosis tools or HD Tune or similar which reports S.M.A.R.T monitoring just to make sure it wasnt a glitch which caused windows to throw up that dialog box.
See below dialog box which shows drive status in HD Tune ( Picture taken from web )
    Code:

By the way does accesing folders or files cause any problems ?

Is this the main drive where o/s is installed ?
Just to make sure have you checked HD cables and connections to make sure they are connected properly.
You can also unplug and replug the HD helps sometimes.
If you dont have any important data to loose , you can try few dos utilities like Hirens BootCD which has HD diagnostics etc and boots from cd , you can also try HDD Regenerator which helped in few hard disks which had problems running in windows.

If you need a link to Hirens BootCD you can pm me.

yeah this is the main HDD with the os installed mate.

i never had much on it to lose as its a new HDD so neverf got much on it, the only windows disc i could find here was XP pro so i've tried to reformat it and everything seems ok so far...guess i'll try windows7 again when i get back to my caravan (thats where my disc is) and see if that works ok

Download hirens boot cd and run the hdd diagnostic tools. This will scan, identify also attempt any repairs on the hdd.

I would seriously back up any data needed, fdisk it and get a clean instal of windows onto it.

You could also boot into recovery console, type chkdsk /r, that would let windows do a complete scan of the hdd and again try to repair any errors detected.

its the dos way to delete the partition of the hdd. This is what i would do before an RMA is needed.

                  Back up all data.
                  Get copy of xp.
                  Boot from cd.
delete the partition that the operating system is installed to.
                  Re-partition the hdd and format.
                  Reinstal windows (what ever version)
                  Monitor from there.

I think a chkdsk /r (full hdd scan would be ok on this 1)
Also an RMA is a system for returning faulty hardware. I recently had to do it on a ASUS P5QL-E motherboard as was shipped with bent cpu fans (common on socket 775 boards)

Reallocated Sector Count error usually happens with underpowered power supplys. I ll suggest you try the HDD with another computer to rule out power supply problems and then just return the HDD for a replacement. If you tell them the error message i am sure they will replace it under the warranty.

i notice it mentions overheating in there.

well cunny you may remember my last post a few weeks ago about my lappy keep crashing and freezing etc, thats when i bought the new HDD thinking it was that, after i put it in it was still crashing upuntill wednesday when i decided to take it apart, the fan and heatsink were full of fluff and dust so i cleaned it all down and had no problems till yesterday when that happened.

could it overheating previously have caused the bad sector?

yes and in also could be caused by power supply.

I thought u were gonna send it back i definatly would be now, sounds like it needs a service and proper clean out now

the only reason i never sent back was because i had already opened it up to fix the bit of snapped plastic inside so they will see that and send it back unrepaired to me.

think it could be time it takes a tumble down the stairs
