If the PC only slows down when connected to the internet (e.g. downloading), what anti-virus are you using?

How much RAM do you currently have installed? Assuming your XP Pro install is the 32bit version (as most of them were) then, with a 958MB GFx card, you're only going to see 3.14GB at most anyway.

Reinstalling windows and drivers, then applying the service packs and hotfixes, before other software (e.g. office packages) can help wonders. If you don't fancy reinstalling windows, give the system a quick clean-up; empty the "recycle bin" and use CCleaner or Advance SystemCare to get rid of temp files. A defrag may help too.

Check your temps using SpeedFan or Speccy. Dust traps heat, heat causes the system to throttle back.

Also check how full your C: drive is. The more full the boot drive the slower it works - especially if everything is in the user accounts as Windows looks in these folders on each boot.

Have you previously uninstalled programs like Norton antivirus?Sometimes they leave unwanted processes that run in the background.
