pc freezing

every time i'm on pc it keeps freezing after bout 1/2hr
can't log off or shut anything down only way is to switch power off then power up again i've got AVG upto date & i clean & defrag regular can anyone shed any light on this

soundds like a hardware problem. I would start by checking the memory. I would remove one memory module and see if it happens again, if it does then put the module back in and remove a different one, repeat this until you have tried it without each of the memory modules.

Most likely its the CPU fan - open the case and see if it works. Usually when the CPU fan stops, CPU temperatures rise after 30 min-1 h depending on the CPU usage, and the CPU stops working.

I have had this problem on my home pc drove me mad for months, tried different ram, swapped the cpu, added more fans, changed the graphics card, eventually gave up and built a new pc, then used one of the hard drives (400 gig that had just been used for storing media) on my work pc and got the same thing happen on that, 400 gig hdd now in the bin!

found out it was the old harddrive i put in last year
all sorted now thanks for all your help

Use this speedFan
SpeedFan 4.39 - V3.co.uk - formerly vnunet.com
and you can check what procesor has got temperature.
If temperature still will heighten , problem is with your cooling.
If temperature will be stable you can be sure it is not cooling problem.
Please check and let me know what temperature your processor has

Andy, try changing the IDE/SATA leads on the drive. If not, find make of the drive, goto thier site and you can download utility's for the drive.

put new harddrive in tower thrown old one away after setting bout it with BIG HAMMER

1.use strong security suites (scan in safe mode to make sure of removal of the threats to your pc)

symantec endpoint
spyblaster
spysweeper
spybot sd

2. defragment the hard drive.
3. if still continuning you could have bad errors that have created on the hard drive you will either command prompt or recovery console to fix it.

start - run -cmd
type chkdsk (C:/example)
