    Resolution for fresh XP Installation

ive just installed a fresh version of window xp pro on my old pc... ive noticed after the installation that the screen resolution has gone a bit weird... the the resolution has gone big with grainy feel to it... its not as sharp as before...

ive clicked on the properties on the desktop , then appearance then i can;t select the high resolution....

is there a fix or this?

    thanks...

yes mate you need to install the latest nvidia or ati graphics drivers .the reason why your getting a crap resolution is that its the windows default graphics drivers from the xp install cd

go to control panel/device manager/display adapters from there you will be able to update the display drivers.

having looked on the dell website there are two different graphic drivers for your laptop, did you check the adapter to see which one you have got.

Its not a laptop, its the dimension 2600... (desktop)

I downloaded both files, but one wouldn't work and the other did... but that one gave me a blank screen :-(

i think you might have to do a clean install of your o/s and then use device manager to update your graphics driver that way it will download the drivers needed.
there are drivers for 2600 but without knowing the display adapter its not possible to tell which you drivers you need, if you use the driver and support facility it does not even list a dimension 2600 it stops at 2400.

                      safe mode

boot the computer up in safe mode if the driver was nvid you can unninstall it there when you have done that

power off the pc open up the side and if its not on board graphics it will have a card in just have a dookies and it will say either nvid or ati post the model number and i will fish you a link to the official driver download page you will find that if you searched and downloaded drivers for "inspiron 2600" you have installed mobile graphics drivers hence no screen

I would do the above, then if you don't want to remove side of PC just start PC up, go to device manager, go to the properties of the device, then click the details tab then from the dropdown menu select hardware ID's, for example on my machine for the display adaptor it gives this: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV2A42&SUBSYS_FF1E1179&REV_07

Vendor is 8086 (Intel) and Device is 2A42 (Mobile Intel 4 Series Chipset Family) If you go to PCI Vendor and Device Lists and type the numbers in it will tell you the manufacturer and also which device it is, you have to enter in one of the numbers and not both.

Nvidia and Ati graphics came with Vista. I think you must download Sis Vga drivers, and before installing disinstall the drivers you installed before
