Clear the cmos by using the jumper caps on the motherboard. To fund these google model number of motherboard, or consult manual. If you cant find it, unplug from mains, remove cmos battery, wait 20 mins.

Try differant hdd leads, ide or sata.

If its overheating, try clearing out any dust from heat sinks with a can of air.

Try re-seating ram, u need to remove all drives if still no display, only leaving the basics in, cpu, ram, graphics card.

Once you've done the things above, it could well be the motherboard, ram, graphics or cpu that has gone faulty.

Without any HDD/DVD or CD Drives you should still get BIOS POST messages, I would try clearing the CMOS 1st before any purchase is made

Is there a way to check if either the mobo or processor is at fault?

Tried to refresh the CMOS but still nothing. Thing is he's pretty skint so don't think he can afford another he'd too, unless u can still get mobos with IDE ports on em instead of Sata?

Don't want to rain on anybody's parade here but have you tried an alternative power supply?

Does the power indicator lamp light up?

Does the cpu fan or case fans run?

Are there any led indicators on the mobo and if so do they light up?

Try removing the CPU, cleaning off the heat sink compound and replacing with fresh heat sink compound.

A motherboard test card can be purchased from fleabay

New Nice Motherboard CPU DDR VGA HDD + PSU Tester Kit on eBay (end time 11-Jul-10 10:08:34 BST)

I have the cheaper PCI one similar to this

2-Digit PC DIAGNOSTIC CARD Motherboard POST Tester on eBay (end time 30-Jul-10 11:54:19 BST)

but it seems that USB ones are now available.

These testers simulate the computers "P.O.S.T." (Power On Self Test) and report errors.

                    does the bios post display?

When you say it crashed - do you mean the screen froze with a picture on it or did the monitor just blank?

If that was the case, the system would reboot once cooled down. There is a fault with a part somewhere. Possibly RAM

Can we have Full System specs?
