    Internet conection on the fritz

Hi all,I apologise if I have posted in the wrong place however here i go.I have just had to format my daughter's desktop for reasons I won't go into and I have reinstalled a copy of windows xp home I have which only has service pack 1 on it(old copy).I have installed service pack 2 and service pack 3 which i downloaded this week from microsoft website and all seems good. However she cannot get online with the router she was supplied from virgin which is an Ambit 256.When I go into network connections and right click on LAN/1394 connection it gives the staus as connected at 400mbps,so I assume it is working but for some reason she cannot get online.I called the tech support at virgin and some tech guy in India and I went thru a whole host of checks etc for an hour(god bless his wee heart) but he gave up and told me it's a hardware problem.Anyhoo am I missing something?Anyone have any idea how I can get her computer to "recognise" the connection?I have been on their wesite and from what I can glean they will charge her for a call, any help would be much appreciated, cheers.

make sure the drivers are installed for the ethernet port,
try a different network card or different pc plugged into it see if it gives you a connection, if it does it's the ethernet port, if it doesnt work, its your modem,

I had a problem like that, everything was looking fine told me it was connected, but the ethernet port just wasnt working on my pc, I got a new add on card for it and it went online straight away,

      Ok, can you ping anything?

      Open dos window type:

      ipconfig

What is the address you are given? Sounds like a 169 IP to me.

      In the dos window type:

      ping BBC - Homepage
      ping 62.253.162.40

You should get 4 replies for both. Have you tried plugging the modem into the laptop directly, without the router?

Come back one done and let us know how your getting on.

        Thanks chaps

Thank you all.My daughter's desktop is a dell dimension 5100 and I thought that replacing the interface card was an option ,can anyone recommend one? Maplins is the nearest option for getting one.
