    laptop HDD adapter

    hi folks,

    wonder if someone could help,

a friends given me a laptop to fix, basically it won't power up, checked the power supply that seems to be fine,
tried a different PS that that won't charge the battery or power the laptop either.

Have tried removing the memory for 30 seconds and a couple of other tricks but still nothing no sound of anything kicking in either.

I'm thinking the laptop is a gonner and not worth economical repair so i'm just trying to recover the data from the hard drive.
The laptop is a Dell inspiron 510m, HDD is a WD 400 Scorpio Enhanced IDE Hard drive (s/n: wxe305283491), I've got a IDE/Sata adaptor and have brought a 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch IDE Hard Drive Cable Adapter, but this doesn't fit the hard drive,
the HDD is a 44 pin female connection, but male pins on the adapter is a 40 pin, and the pins are too thick to match up to the HDD.

I've had a shop around and can't find the appropriate adapter,
could anyone point me in the right direction?

    any help appreciated

    cheers

I normally buy them on Ebay for about ?1.60, but delivery can be a bit slow at times. If you're in a hurry you can get one from Maplins for ?6:

IDE to 2.5 Laptop IDE Cable : ATA Floppy Cables : Maplin

I have one of those.. It does work, but it didn't really like a sata boot.

I went down another route and bought a hard drive caddy for my old thinkpad t23. Allows the dvd/floppy slot to take a 2nd hd instead

This is definately the best product to have and gives flexibility to use with any hard drive drivewire - universal hard drive adapter

Also acronis relabled software is bundled for free.

Have you tried powering it on with the battery removed? It has been known before that a duff battery can prevent a Dell from powering up.
