could be a number of reasons

    do the basic's

1.check hardware for faults and make sure cooling is sufficent. cpu,cpu fan, fans, ram and graphics card etc anything that can cause faults.
2.check for corrupt sofware's like drivers (unistall current and remove all the backups drivers in safe mode) then reinstall when cleared them.any software configurations you have with the graphic's if you overclock or changed anything major on it reset them or clear them.

    hope you get it sorted.

      Do Option #2.

Also, how hot is your card getting when you run the crap out of the video card for 30 minutes or so?

I don't play any games on my pc, I use my ps3 for that. So the most Intensive use of my card would be watching video files

Thats fine, watch some videos. Just leave that program up in the background 24/7 ... Let me know what the MAX temperature says after a day or so.
