    HTC desire S.........

................g'day, got a glimpse of one of these today, looks impressive. albeit a little on the large side.
how are the Android phones for apps? i dont know much about Android but the from what i saw today the iphone looks like a loser.

How about the Samsung Galaxy ii, i remember the original Galaxy being launched as an iphone beater, but it soon lagged behind.

whats preventing the newer Androids from promising alot then falling short of the mark?

The original Desire can still hold it's own.

The Galaxy S is a good phone, the Galaxy S II is a monster of a phone.

The only thing that's letting down the Android phones at present is the lack of a moderated app store.

Amazon will be launching it's own app store for Android & Blackberry soon. It's been delayed due to Apple bleating to the courts that they own a trademark on the words 'app store'. Apple lost, but it's still delaying the launch.

Once someone starts quality checking the apps for Android & make them easier to find, we should see a boom in available apps.

The phones themselves are way ahead of Apple when it comes to the hardware. The only way they could fail to deliver is if software support was to stop... But this isn't going to happen to the main stream Android devices.

Hardware wise they are similar, main thing seems to be battery life on HTC and Galaxy S II can be low if you have GPS and other stuff running all the time. Software wise main difference is that apple have a tight grip on apps though the good news is you know the quality is going to be good.

There are not many apps I can think off that are on iphone but not on android and your basic stuff like social networking integration is very good on both. However the quality on the Android is very variable. Some apps are very very good, others buggy. There are plenty of review sites that can help you sort through them.

One item that I have found and will effect you with the new high resolution phones is that not all apps scale properly so sometimes you end up with an app running in a smaller portion of the screen or apps not taking advantage of the increased resolution.

Also there is not decent standard media player built in. There are some you can download but not as slick as the iphone. I believe VLC is being ported over which should fix the issue.

TBH, you won't be disappointed with iphone, desire or galaxy S II.

thanks chaps, gonna keep abreast of this.
been in touch with Vodafone today and they say i can upgrade now, free. as i had a customer service issue and this is their take on a little compensation.
not yet seen a galaxy s in the flesh. have a look this weekend. but i do fear for the build quality. the HTC seemed good, but a little behind the iphone 4. from a build quality point.

Personally I would take the HTC over the apple but then again I am not apple's biggest fan.

come on lads, give me a final push................the HTC i am looking at is the newer desire HD, not the S.

Is this an all dancing, all singing, iphone smashing monster of a phone?

              mick.

After watching a video on YouTube shown the iphone4 and a HTC hd side by side I think the iphone4 wins. Yes the HTC has a 1.2 gig processor and a much bigger screen. But the iPhone milkweed it on display and camera/video modes.

Onwards to the galaxy s ii.

                Mick.

The only person who can finally decide is yourself. They are both great products. Personally I like the HTC interface and I hate the way apple control everything so its a no brainer to me persoanlly.

If I were you Mick, I'd go into a shop & play with all 3 phones.

As oneman said, you're the one that has to live with the decision.

I'm looking at desire s or sgs2 think the later might be a bit too big like the desire HD. Will goto orange though as I get a nice 25% all line rental due to work using then for business

Desire S free on panther 30 and dolphin 35 think its panther 35 for the sgs2

The galaxy s2 does have a gloriously big screen, but the phone is VERY thin and light.

                        I paid ?250 for the handset on a 12 month contract @ ?20pm.

I will be going and handling the phones this weekend. Never buy owt without a touchy feely.
When you consider you could be stuck with your choice for 2 years it's wise to ask around.
The galaxy is the only phone I can get free and on 12 month contract. Which is a big plus.

                          Mick.

Ok, I've managed to grab some time to read up on the Desire S

Over all, it is a good phone. In fact a smaller version of the Incredible S... Just with a stronger construction & smaller screen. There are other small differences, the camera being one, with subsequent software changes for the lower spec hardware.

The only bad points I've found that might effect the normal user are few & far between. As mentioned, the 5MP camera is nowhere near as good as the 8MP in the larger phones. Both full res pics & 720p videos are not as sharp as the larger 8MP cameras.
The LCD screen does suffer a bit in direct sunlight. But the quality of the image away from the light is superb. It's also covered by gorilla glass that can take a hammering without breaking (almost literally).
Lastly, the loudspeaker lacks in bass. It does have great clarity so music will be crisp & clean, but very little bass is carried.
There has been a recurring issue with the touch buttons not lighting up correctly. It's a known issue, but no solution at present. The buttons themselves do still work, they just might not light up all the time.

Other than those small issues it is a very well designed & robust phone that will handle everyday requirements for the normal user (I am not a normal user & want the truly all singing, all dancing phone). It is also a very easy phone to use.
