try and access the internet on the handset, i would spk with vodafone and see if they have the service available on pay as you go or else u are wasting ur time.
with tmobile you have to be on contract and pay ?5 per month for the service. with out the service proviosioned on the account all you will be able to do is make recieve calls and send receive texts
