    Help Newby to Satallite

    Hi Guys
I?m switching from cable to satellite but haven?t a clue what receiver or size dish to get.
Ideally I would like a receiver box that gives me HD quality channels and has an HD recorder facility.
Are there any packages out there where all the necessary bits are sold together?
Not sure if it makes a difference but I live in the Midlands.

    Regards

      Hi Nathan
      Thanks for your reply.
I?m looking to spend anywhere between ?100 - ?200 ish.
Ideally I would like to pick up the sports channels either in the uk or further a field but I don?t know where to start.
I didn?t realize it?s a bit of a mine field to be honest, there is so much choice out there and I would hate to pick up the wrong gear.

      Regards

Do you have a satellite dish on your house at the minute? If you do it makes getting into satellite a bit easier.

Set ups come in three flavours

Fixed, which will probably be a mini dish pointing at 28e (Uk Channels)

Multi Lnb which is a fixed dish with lnbs pointing a different satellites fed into a switch. This gives you a little more choice than just uk channels.

Motorised - the hobbiest favourite a dish that moves and can watch about 40 odd satellites in the sky depending on satellite size.

After deciding on your choice of set up. You then need to choose your box. Look for something with networking cabilities. Dreambox, Spiderbox, Technomate are all popular choice.

for ?100 to ?200 quid mate you will be very lucky to get a any setup capable of getting any channels

the basic i could recommend is a openbox (about ?100) sly uk dish ( ?20 ebay) lnb for the sat (?10) cable (?10)
installation ?30 ish ( well it is here in the southwest for a fixed dish)

so thats close to the top end of your budget straight away im afraid

if you want premium sly channels *which) im guessing you do i cant discuss the way but google card sharing
you will find nothing that you want is free in the sat game it aint like cable saying that sat is very very reliable if u get the right package pm me for more details mate i can help

          regards

          nath

ideally get a motorised dish 1m if possible, but that alone will set up back about ?120 assuming you can set it up yourself. installers charge the earth i have seen on here people quoted up to ?300 for installation. use google to search for dishes, i use wizard satellites myself which is close by me so i can fetch my own but they do, do free delivery if over 50quid. now for the box part i use dreambox 500s they are about 50quid (clone) and 800s (clone) for HD which are about 120quid. any linux box really will do the job theres just too many to chose from so that will be your choice you need to make. one other thing is where are you going to get the channels from? they are not just freely floating around the internet. The best way to get them is to buy a card of something and share it with others and they share theirs with you so that you build up a large amount of shares to different providers and get all the sports etc you need. by the way we dont do the cardshare part of this at dk you would need to google for it. hope this has given you a little more of an understanding before you decide to jump in.

Or even cheaper look for an old sky dish that someone is giving away on freecycle/gumtree or selling on ebay. They regurally go for peanuts 99p. All my dishes have been free! I think I have about four of them!

If you want HD then as suggested about Openbox or you could import a Dreambox 800 for about ?115 from china.

                    Hi

If you live in the Midlands there is a sat company that supply and fit sky minidish, this probably depends on your location. They charged me ?50 to supply and fit when I asked them to install for a friend of ine.

Dreambox 500s maybe too much for a novice so maybe the easy openbox s9/s10. The S9 is probably about ?70 to ?80 dont know about S10.

So for about ?120/?130 or less your setup is ready for sly uk.

Then if you google c/s as it cant be discussed here you are nearly there on your budget.......if you get really lucky might even get change out of ?200 .

If you are not a novice and you go for the dreambox 500s then you will defo get change.

                      Hi Mast
I'm certainly a novice mate ,i must be as thick as two short planks as i don't know a thing about satallites but i plan to save a few quid and put it up myself,i could go a bit more that ?200 if i had to.

                      Cheers

                        Hi

Ummh dont know if you want to go down the route of putting up your on dish but hey if you want to give it a go why not.

You will need an idea of how to setup a dish and maybe also a meter but you can get away without meter if you know what you doing.

Is it sly uk hd channels you after or you after other channels cos thats when its going to get complicated as you need motorised dish.

I know my way round fixed sly dishes but not attempted a motorised dish, then again I dont get much time to watch tv and when I have time spend too much time flicking channels and end up watching nothing .

Easy way to set up a fixed dish. Point it in the same direction as your neighbours sly dish and you wont be far off.

Moto dish a lot more complicated although not too bad. Plenty tutorials on how to set them up.

                            Hi Mast
To be honest I had never heard of sly TV until tonight, I thought the poster had made a spelling mistake and really meant to write sky TV.
The only channels I really want to watch are the sports channels to be honest.

I would just like to thank all you kind hearted people for going out your way to help point me in the right direction.

                            Thanks

                              Hi

Haha sly tv = sky tv same thing. You will be ok for the sports channels once youve setup and have a cline which you will have to google for.

If you are putting dish up yourself you may even be able to afford Dreambox 800 hd pro. Read up a bit before you make your mind up.
