satellite receivers that can act as servers when in standby?

I hope someone can help me with this question.

newbie here who has just bought an openbox s9. i want to use that as part of a multiroom setup with another box using my official sky uk subscription.

can anyone provide a list of boxes that can act as card sharing servers while in standby mode? cost is a factor so a cheap one is preferred.

Do you know of any cheaper ones that have hd capabilty?
i had thought about buying the blade 7000S or echolink EL7700 but could not find any info on whether they would work in standby mode.

        Why is standby important ?

True standby mode is a power reducing mode that should effectively turn off everything except the IR receiver. Cheap PVR type boxes (and some of the cheaper standard boxes) etc need to also run the processor at a low clock rate so they can power up when needed for 'timer' events.

For any box to be running a server then it cannot be in true standby mode as pretty much everything needs to be powered up and operational (tuner/processor/demodulators/lnb power etc). Dreamboxes, for instance, do nothing more than to disable the video output when in standby mode (reducing power by virtually nothing). For those (an many other boxes), other than the video output, there is no difference between standby and normal operation.

btw, SKY/VM subbed boxes also dont really have a standby mode as they are constantly looking for 'background' transmissions like firmware updates and network configuration changes - this requires pretty much everything to be permanently powered.

            thanks for your reply.

yep i was looking for a low powered state while using the server...

i did not realise that the lnb and tuner need power when the card is being used by another box. i thought that the client carried out all the work and only requested decryption info from the server card which would not need the lnb/tuner to be powered.

can you explain what would happen if the server dish was pointing at a different satellite to what the client was pointing at?

?120 mate or spend another 30 or 40 and buy direct from uk, the 120quid price is from hong kong but my mates have bought them from hong kong and no problems, its just the same as buying from the uk except if anything goes wrong its easier to send it back in the the uk.

If your using a box simply as a cardserver then you dont actually need the tuner/demodulator powered as obviously you dont need any streamdata. However, the dreambox itself will likely still leave such things powered as the box is basically either fully on or fully off. As I mentioned earlier, most boxes simpy disable only the video output whilst in 'standby' mode.

You could save some power by disconnecting the dish entirely. At least you wont be powering the lnb then (btw, LNB's are often permanently powered to keep them at a 'reasonably constant' working temperature).

The current Sky+HD boxes ( Amstrad DRX890/895) do have a low power standby mode ( activated by a long press of the power button) that powers down everything but IR, but it renders the box useless as a pvr as it won't wake to record etc.

Yes, I think they were forced to include it by some EU ruling or other but they dont seem to really want people to actually use it. The main problem is that during the 'deep' powerdown mode the card receives no update EMM's so could potentially miss important updates. The updates are usually in a cyclical carousel but it potentially means that a box cant decrypt channels immediately a customer powers up. To minimise this problem Sky are now forced to retransmit important EMM's much more frequently thus wasting potential bandwidth.

The server does not determine SD or HD, its the card entitlements.

You can even use a old Dm500c cable receiver. Obv you wont get a feed connected as it has a cable tuner but it will act as a server and share.

thanks for the info.. you've been a great help.

i decided that the power difference would be minimal in standby so i settled on buying another openbox (s10) for now in the bedroom. ordered yesterday.

i'm going to look at buying a 3d receiver for the third multiroom when i upgrade my projector to 3d in the future.
