Premier League Chief Scudamore considers TV rights sale

The Premier League are actively considering selling their next set of TV rights across the whole of Europe rather than just Britain, chief executive Richard Scudamore disclosed.
Scudamore, who also confirmed they would have no option but to sell the rights to Al Jazeera should they outbid Sky and meet all the criteria, said PL officials were deciding whether selling the rights on a pan-European basis would provide more income and protection.

A European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling on landlady Karen Murphy's case stated they must not give "broadcasters territorial exclusivity on a member state basis", and Scudamore said: "We have two scenarios we are weighing up. One of the implications of the ECJ decision is that we are still working on whether we might actually sell rights on a pan-European basis."

He continued: "We are still actually deliberating whether we should sell on a territory by territory basis, or whether with what's happened post-ECJ with the freedom of movement it's actually more applicable and you would actually get better protection or a better return if you sold on a pan-European basis."

Al Jazeera are expected to rival Sky for the dominant position as the domestic broadcaster in Britain, and ESPN are also likely to bid for some packages when the rights go out for tender, which is expected to be during the next three months.

Sky have held the majority of the domestic packages during all 20 years of the Premier League's existence and though Scudamore said loyalty counted for a lot they were bound to abide by competition regulations - and that means selling to the highest bidder.

Industry experts have speculated that Al Jazeera's financial clout, which has already seen the Middle East-based broadcaster wrest the French league rights from Canal Plus, could provide a serious threat to Sky.

Scudamore added: "Loyalty counts in many senses. But, remember, our current arrangements - and I see no reason why our future arrangements won't have to be - are regulated, and are regulated heavily.

"Our packages are put out into the open market and we have to have an open tender for those packages. We have to sell to the highest compliant bidder.

"Whilst, of course, we have a huge regard and respect and Sky's made a fantastic impact on our business, ultimately whatever umbilical cord there might be as an ongoing, working, commercial relationship, that gets severed once that tender gets issued. There's nothing they can do other than be the best bidder to win those rights."

The more competition there is the better for us, and I beleive the Al Jazeera bid is a serious one. The money they have they should easily out bid Sky, but its meeting all the other criterias the PL has that will be the main issue for them.

Al-jazeera with their crap TV picture??

Unless if they will start broadcasting on 28.2E, with HD channels.

Sky will increase their bid and pass on the cost to the poor end user. Without football sky will be nothing

To be honest ive never watched Al-Jazeera's coverage so cnt comment on the picture quality. But im sure they can improve it and if Sky can improve their offer then Al-Jazeera can easily match it or beat it, like i said its meeting all the criterias set by the PL that will be Al-Jazeera's main obstacle.

If they get the rights there is little doubt that they would broadcast through the "Sky" satellite to the UK and in HD as well.

IMO it will be good to get most off Sky, should stop the upward pressure on Sky sub prices - unless Sky bid silly(er) money on just 1 or 2 packs.

They may just take the PL games ESPN has in the begining then expand as they are more known in the UK. That's just a guess tho, but they should bid for the FA cup games aswell as im sure AL-Jazeera wants to be known world wide and they already have the CL in Asia n Europe, the FA cup is the oldest competition which is also known worldwide which would suit them.

I have bought Jsc card in the past for cheap football. My post was in response to zee24 post that aljazeera may make a bid for uk epl rights and they could make a bid for the package espn currently have. But it would be more of a plus if they had FA Cup / carling cup rights too. Aljazeera would launch there own uk channel if they where to win rights

I know they would IF they won it, just like ESPN did.

I don't know if they will win overall rights but im sure they will win something, they want to be in every country so that they can eventually promote the Qatar WC when that comes around, from now and until then they will do everything they can to win support from people that they deserved to win the bid (even tho i think they didn't) world wide n in their own country.

If they can get hold of sky epg slots from other channel broadcasters that are closed down or due to close down. Theres no reason why they can't launch as an independant standalone channel/package like Boxnation and the Asian channels.

All they would do is pay sky for the use of the epg slots and the NDS encryption.
