even if you get a dish with a quad lnb you could get a saorview and sat box which is the irish dtt with an aerial and sat channels with a dish.
questions what are your needs hd box most likely?
do you want to view only and not record=single tuner box.
yes want to record then a twin tuner with internal hdd.
starting off then a fixed dish with a quad lnb=can use 2 twin receivers
most boxes come pre flashed/firmware loaded but not capable of decrypting unless other things are added, plenty of people to help you out, just take your time.
some you tube links you could look at.

I like to think I'm a fast learner but because I don't know where to start its annoying...if I buy a box and get a dish installed I don't know what the hell I do then, and I don't wanna pay some dude approx ***8364;400 to do it for me!! How did you guys get started! Anything I search for doesn't help!! Think I'll bite the bullet and pay sky (robbing b&***8364;tids)
there is a sticky for setting up a dish , usually a motorised dish I grant you

and some sections do have help on setting up a box

the problem here is that there is no "one size fits all" so most people start off slowly and learn the basics , and you were told you would have sleepless nights and pull your hair out too

the majority of starters in the british isles have a sky dish and so they tend to start off there , and progress

others may decide to get a motorised system fitted , sometimes with a box , sometimes a box that they buy themselves

the problem here is that with the requirements you asked for it narrowed the field a lot and bumped up the price too

and you wont get anything for free , except channels that actually are free, which are called free to air

the problem with that, is that most people want the hard stuff like the prem , sport and movies, and that definitely costs extra

I always recommend that people buy the correct stuff right from the start, to suit their own requirements , and not buy cheap, otherwise you buy twice !

so yes its complicated and you were told this all the way through this thread

but if you only want 28 east , and a twin tuner pvr , then you want a mini dish pointed at 28e with quad lnb fitted, and a twin coax cable and a vu+ duo

then you check the vu+ duo section here for help and advice on programming it and setting it up

      EDIT

ps: if you are going to buy a dm800 then you need to check the dreambox section , but you also have to decide if its going to be an original box or a clone box

if its a clone box then you have to know which one it is and what tools and images and plugins you can safely use on it (clone safe)

i would still recommend the blade as the most easy set up and simple to use box there is

or vu duo , uno or solo clones as these boxs do not use patched images which cause most beginners all the trouble in the dm or enigma2 section

if i where you and looking a linux box to start of with please read the enigma 2 section and look at the trouble people have setting up dreamboxs

then look at vu set ups you will not see a no ca error or wrong sim fault in vu section

would derfinatly have to agree with potrobber the blade is the easiest noob freindly box to set up. as for installing the dish i just used dishpointer.com and got a cheap sat signal meter from b&q (about ?8). point the dish in the direction dish pointer tells u then fine tune with signal meter

I'm with Smokejam on this one.

I used to have a D2Mac setup and loved it. That was ages ago now and trying to find the best way back into the satellite scene seems bewildering (and that's compared to the old BBS days!)

The Blade seems like a good bet so thanks for the recommendation (though the Dreambox 500 is a ton cheaper so I'd go for that if I could get it to do the same things - the redundancy cheque is nearly gone!)

I suppose what it comes down to is the most frequent/reliable updates. If that's the Blade then that sounds good. If it's the Dream then I'd go for the learning curve.

I'm guessing that there's SOME way to get the premium content onto these devices?

            Back to Google...cheers.

cs is the way to get that m8, already mentioned throughout this thread

blade is HD and a good choice for the newbie, and its HD , and not a clone either , and gets you more channels as you get HD as well as SD

dm500s is a clone , even a bm500s is a clone of a dm500s, how do I know this ? because dream havent made the dm500s for several years as they do not make SD boxes any more. so you are not comparing like with like

so dm500s is SD , its a clone , it runs linux unlike a blade 7000s HD (the one you compared it to). so its like comparing cola and lager , both are drinks but there is no comparison in taste and content, but they are both liquid and quench your thirst

you can easily cut your teeth on a cheap option like a dm500s or bm500s, then move on later to HD boxes, either easy to setup like a blade, or more complicated like a dreambox or vu

                Cheers Ramjet,
usually I'm for lager but in this case I think it's going to have to be coke!
I'll do the search on cs...hoping I find out what the hell that picture of the marine mammal that likes fish and rhymes with peal has to do with everything.

wrong animal m8, its rhyming slang and equates to sea lion (say it quickly)

definitely not your peal or peel
