Help finding thor (Any installers in stockton-on-tees?)

Iv been trying to find thor all morning on my new set up but had no joy.

Im sure everything is set up correctly ie, the poles level, latitude correct on motor, dish elevation is set in accordence with my latitude as shown in the table in the motor instructions.

my lat is 54.5 N Lon is 1.3 E and iv set the elevation to 27 on the dish bracket and lat to 54.5 on motor.

Iv pointed to aprox south then told the motor to go to thor. It moves and then i scan for channels and manually move the dish bit by bit but i cant get a lock on.

Im not sure what im doind wrong.

iv rang a satellite installer to see how much to come with there meter and find the arc for me and they want ?50.

Im just a bit disappointed that i have set every thing else up but just cant get a lock on anything.

Iv even tried importing a channel list and going to bbc world on thor and manually adjusting but it just keeps saying "moving position to thor" and no signal.

    im using a 500s with dk1.1

help please i dont really fancy parting with ?50 if i dont have to.

      ?50 isnt bad really...

i would import channel list send the motor to thor on BBC world, let it move and say no signal, then get someone to watch the tv whilst you manually adjust dish till a picture appears on the tv, dependant on what receiver you have keep the signal level on the tv screen so u know if your going in the right way when adjusting the dish

just a thought you dont have no tree's or anything in the way do you?

if your long and lat are set correctly keep dish fairly loose round the pole and gently touch it round to the left or right if you get a signal tighten bolts firmly.if this does not help try the same with the elevation

this is the easiest way to track the clarc belt, send your motor to 28.2 e[sky] and disconnect the motor and connect the dish directlt to a sky box then get the signal screen and point your dish in the same direction as all the sky dishes on your street and play aoround untill you get a lock on signal..then without fine tuning it connect your motor back up and send it to 1 west..it may not work yet but now you know your nearby then load another persons channel list and play abit more with the dsh until you get signal on BBC world..then fine tune the nb and whole setup..this is how we did it first time around...

its a 95cm dish btw. i dont think anythings obstructing it as i set it above the roof line and it had a clear sight. I cant move it any higher or i will fall next time lmao.

i imported the captains channel list and went to bbc world. The motor moved slightly to thor and the message came up saying moving to 1W but it stayed on and wouldnt go off (not sure if thats caus there was no signal) Then a message came up saying no service and i kept having to press the info button to bring up the epg with the signal strength on but it was about 60% and it didnt move up or down no matter which way i moved the dish.

I also tried going to 28.2 and moving it to the same position as the neighbours sky dishes and selected bbc1 and it was exactly the same.

I also tried using a little cheap sat finder that came with the kit but i couldnt get my head round it. it had a continuous beep and the signal went up and down depending how far i turned the knob on the sat finder but it didnt really change when i just moved the dish.

I think my starting point at 0deg (true south) might be slightly out but once powered to thor and manualy spinning the dish shud pick up some sort of signal shouldnt it.

I havent really had a play about with the elevation as i just set it to the setting as described in the motor manual. does 27 sound about right?

Could it have any thing to do with the lnb and cable?

im not sure if im pointing it in the right direction but iv got backwards and forwards just past the way the sky dishes are pointing. Should you pick up a signal straight away or do you need to wait a couple of mins each time you move the dish?

Its doing my head in now i managed to risk my life to get it up pmsl and would like to get the last job of allining it done with out getting anyone else in. (thats like giving up )

so any more ideas? Thanks alot

heres a pic what you think of the elevation. it looks too steep to me compired to others but thats what it said in the motor book for my latitude

                    the satfinder works by beeping

you turn the decibels down to the lowest point for maximum signal till it barely comes on anymore

what you need to do is get it somewhere near to where the sky dish points.

loosen the nuts so the dish can turn left and right but not too tight

use satfinder by turning the decibels down when it beeps, when it stops beeping turn dish till you find the lowest decibel point tighten the nuts

repeat that same procedure for the elevation for optimum results you should be able to hear the beep with the decibl level turned up very slightly on sky uk

tigten up again make sure it doesnt move again in the process you will have an aligned dish

if using a boquet doesnt work do a scan but start with sky it should pick them all up no probs then if it still wont find thor scan all satellites from 30w to 42 east may take all night but it should work

the sat finder is one of them chess ones and it just has a continus beep. and as i turn the db up the reading goes higher. it says turn the db up so reading is about 5 then move dish. i did that but no matter where i moved it the reading stayed the same. it only changed if i turned the db up or down

i just conected the finder between the cable off the lnb and cable off the receiver. thats right isnt it? do you have to use the lead that comes with it?

right say it beeps really high and goes to 10 decibels you need to turn the nob down so it goes to say 5 decibels then turn the dish till it goes higher eg up to 10 again

then turn it down again amd move dish till it goes higher again and repeat till you cant squeeze any extra signal from the dish.

you then have to repeat with the elevation both need to be optimised to get a lock

you optimise by turning the decibels down to their lowest point you can get a beeping signal

btw if thats your dish it is pointing far to high it wants to be more or less straight with just a slight elevation copy the sky elevation

i thought that just followed what setting it said in the table. I got the sat finder on 5 then when i moved the dish it just stayed the same. should it peak no matter what sat you are near to or just the one that the channel is on on your receiver.

do you think its because the elevation is far to much that its not picking anything up

                            thanks alot

Hi ryan, im a noob to sat myself but i saw ur pic and had a look at my sly dish and its almost vertical and my 1m dish on thor is just off vertical so id say straighten it up and push top of dish back about 2 inches or so, my mates a sly installer and i borrowed his meter to do mine so did it in a couple of mins but urs is def tilted too far
