i was in the same position as you a few months ago and with all the advise from everyone on here i soon got my head round things and got everything set up and now theres no looking back.

Theres so much more to tv than sky and cable.

I would suggest you get somthing like a 95-100cm motorised dish set up the lot should cost about ?130 with a decent motor.

Then i would go for a linux box (gives you a cs option) but with ci slot like the tm9100 (thats what i got) its got 2 card slots a ci slot its linux and a PVR. its a Great box. That would be about ?140. This will be totaly future proof. As said by sadiq dont get a cam yet just use emu which is easily updated via remote.

Then you will be able to watch all the footie/films etc possible without paying any subscriptions.

Ive just purchased the technomate 5400 that will allow me to patch it and watch the football. Can you explain more in detail about the cam and emu?

The emu is the software patch that allows the box to
emulate an encryption ie nagravision,,its then possible
to add a softcam which are keys that can open chanels
of this encryption,,,your tm is ideal for this,,,and you can do this for free, but you need a dish pointing at 1deg west to get
              these free nagravision chanels....
if you bought a cam it would mean you could open chanels
of different encryptions that your box cant do with just a patch
ie conax...and these just slot in the front of your tm..
you then can update the cam as and when required...

I think you should stick to using your 5400 with the latset patched firmware and softcam for now. Maybe get a cam later when you're familier with everything, or you discover that the footy you are after is on a con@x encrypted channel. If you get a cam you'll also need a programmer such as a cas 3 etc.
You're also going to need to put up a dish and motor.
This isn't too difficult if you're ok at diy.

Your 5400 will arrive with Technomate firmware on it. This will give you free to air channels (fta)
You'll need to update the firmware to the latest patched version for that box. Be carefull to put the correct patch on for your box.
Next thing to load to the box is the latest softcam. These are latset keys etc needed to open the channels.
Move the dish over to say nova sports on 1W (thor) and you should clear that channel and get footy on a saturday.

Does it matter what brand of cam card you get? And after youve purchased 1 do you get free updates?

Do you have to have a viewing card for the cam to work as it seems they need to be connected

the cam with the best support for files is the diablo cam
and thats the one to buy but you will also need a cas3 programmer to load the cam files. as for smart cards the best is a gamma card this will open even more channels that the patch or cam does'nt open and the files are loaded onto the cam chip you dont need a card but just be aware when you are getting these channels for free there is no gaurantee the files to keep the channels open will always be available and if the providers make a major encryption change for the service
your item could be useless, for me at this point i would forget cards and cams and just use the technomate for the channels that can open, and wait and see what changes take place before you spend or waste lots of money

On Linux boxes like the tm9100, dm500 & 600 etc you can have them plugged into a router and then ,depending on the image that you put on the receiver , when you press the blue button you will acsess the plugin menu and via this you can download all image updates, plugins, skins, emu, keys etc which will download and install straight on to your receiver.

Also because you have it plugged in to your router you can FTP stuff, edit channel lists etc, stream video, set pvr record times etc via a CPU. You can also cs on a Linux receiver but you can't discuss cs here
