I would edit a couple of your questions mate they not allowed on here.
I would recommend an enigma 2 based box like Dreambox or Vu Duo as there's so much more to do with these boxes than just watching tv channels, and get a dish up to 1 metre it will get what you need.
You don't need to spend a fortune,
    Andy.

The 1st thing you need to ask yourself is are you prepared to learn to use ftp to send files to the box, update and solve problems on a reasonably regular basis and do a LOT of reading to learn how these things function. If the answer is no to any of them then enigma based boxes are not for you. If you like to tinker and learn as you go then get yourself a VU+solo2 or duo2 depending on your budget. There's a HUGE amount to learn but the rewards are worth it.

so to answer your questions directly,

1, yes, the more you spend the higher the quality and power of the box, just like a computer.
        2, against the rules mate
3, depends what channel the game is on and if it's a subscription based channel.
4, If you want to use the box to receive sly channels then you'll need to pay them for the channels just like a normal sly box.
5, Depends which sats you wish to receive from. Normal UK one and a couple of others can be received from normal mini dish but some require very large dishes.

        Hope this helps.

DV is right about one thing. Do some reading then read some more and when you think your not far away do more reading.
The best way to learn is to troll through searched posts and follow regular posts on here and you will learn the basics fast and wont need spoon feeding.
It doesn't take that long to pick up the basics and its best to learn when you get into trouble and if you're struggling you will get help off members off DK,
If you're serious stay away from the Skyboxs they cheap nasty and wont last the time. Stick to a Linux based box that fits your budget.

Sorry guys my bad!!!! Rules are always a good place to start! Suppose that's the problem I have when it comes to patience but can clearly see I'm gonna need plenty of it!

Thanks for your replies! Is anyone aware of bowlers computer fair in Manchester and would they recommend it?

Good God , bowlers. Not been there in years. Used to be some great deals but then the internet was invented!

Agree with the recommendations for VU+ Solo2. I got one after having a cheapo skybox and it's a brilliant machine. The amount of reading I had to do to understand it has seriously upped my IQ. Must be nearly 80 by now...

Haha I hate reading too ! Yer bought my starview from there back in the day, seem to remember them having sat stalls too!

So in order to record and watch at the same time and potentially if football is on then the mrs can watch something on another tv in the bedroom would a solo be adequate or is that what the duo is for?

In my head from some reading :-( i think I'm planning a triax 1.1 dish with a superior dark motor and then one of the vu receivers? Not even looked into lnb's yet so that's my next task!

The solo2 is twin tuner so that'll be fine. Major difference with the Duo2 is that the Duo2 has the ability to use 2 twin tuners and it also has a nice screen on the left of the receiver to give extra information. Bit expensive though at ?420 give or take. Have a look at the thread I started for advice on dishes and motors etc. There's some sound advice there. Also bear in mind that anything bigger than 1m if it's below gutter level will need planning permission.

the boxes do not allow for viewing in multiple rooms

a solo2 or duo or duo 2 will allow you to record one programme and watch another, or record 2 programmes , think of it as being like sly plus , but nothing to do with more than one room , so its one box in one room , period

My duo2 allows for streaming 2nd tuner to computer screen while mrs watches something on tv. Thought solo could do that too just without transcoding through hardware?

Loads of ftp programs out there for all platforms be it windows, os x, linux or anything else, they all do the same job in a slightly different way.

oh ok thanks so i guess you can get some sort of magic eye type device to watch in sd and control from upstairs?

So im just trying to get my head around when you would likely need more than a twin tuner as i was looking at the inverto premium quad lnb and it states that It enables the reception of signal from one satellite and its distribution to up-to two single tuner Set-top box (or 1 in the case of a twin-tuner STB) im seriously getting confused

It really is not as simple as a magic eye type device. It would involve using a plugin called webif and having a computer of some type to receive the signal over a network and using a program like VLC to show it. Or you could send the signal through cat5 using special boxes on either end to take the video signal or maybe a wireless box. The options are endless but nothing like sly.

The LNB is what receives the signal after bouncing off the dish allowing you to connect your receivers, so in the situation where you have a quad you have 4 tuners on however many devices you have, so 2 twins or 1 twin and 2 singles or 4 singles. tbh if you don't know the basics of how to connect an LNB to a box then you have got a LOT of reading to do.
