    Sky HD Resolution Ireland

What is Sky's high definition resolution broadcast standard in Ireland, I was thinking about subscribing to this service but could not get a specific answer from the customer rep, is it full 1080P or 1080i your comments are appreciated thanks.

Sky and Virgin both transmit in 720p (1080i). They will not be transmitting in 1080p for many years to come because the cost is prohibitive and they don't have the bandwidth

Only 1080p Blu Ray is 'true' HD.. some Blu Rays are 720p though and some are 1080p.. I'll give you ?1m if you can spot the difference.. Why..? because its less than 1 frame per second

I don't think Sky do any 720p channels. All their hd stuff is 1080i afaik.

        From Sky website..

        # What format will Sky+HD broadcast in?

The highest high definition broadcast format in the UK is 1080i, with Sky+HD supporting both this and the 720p HD format.
which is why i had 720p then 1080i in brackets as both formats are supported..

Either way it doesnt really matter as all the OP needs to know is HD programs aren't broadcast in 1080p

The broadcast is transmitted in 1080i. 720p is supported because the box can take that 1080i broadcast and scale it down to 720p if your tv can't handle 1080i. OP asked about broadcast resolution, technically any resolution is supported if you have some kind of scaler in your box, or another box, or your tv scales

sky hd differs with quality of movie shown but i am happy with excellent picture and 5-1 sound worth the extra bit if you have a big tv and hi fi.
