    Which Smartcard Reader is best

Whats the best Smartcard reader for using on a home server ??

    1/. Omnikey ??

    2/. Smargo ??

    3/. Infiniti USB Smart ??

Can anyone who has any of these, possibly make any comments without breaking any rules ?

I have both an Omnikey and smargo. I used both on a dm800 and currently have an atom server running smargo's. The omnikey is pretty cheap compared to the other choices. They run the sky card well using cccam 2.1.3 with ECM times around 0.1 although with omnikey + newcs I had ECM of 0.08 with the Sly 0963.

I use smargo's now rather than omnikeys now as they are smaller and compact

Whats the benefits of using a cardreader rather than the internal card reader?

          hi

it depends to what emu you are using it on. on newcs omnikey is better. but for cccam smargo is the business.

Not sure if this counts for anything but we sell far more of the Omnikey 3121 over the other 2, but then they are less than half the price... Also seem very popular in Denmark of late...

Spot on, I forgot to mention that. Very solid with NewCs.

Indeed. I only use smargo's because they have no cable and look tidy but where a smargo costs ?30-?40 an omni key can be brought at around ?9 and pretty much does the same thing

External card readers are used by users who run a seperate server. ie, a pc running linux. This allows the user to experiment with different boxes etc without having their server going on and off.....

But at the same time they could use a seperate dreambox?

If you wanted to yes you could...but using a dedicated server can process a lot more connections and because it has more RAM and a faster cpu, it makes the job so much easier. Also it can help extend the life of a STB as you do not need to have it on stand-by. You can use a old pc you have lying around for a server. A lot cheaper than buying another STB

If anyone can recommend the omnikey 3121 for 2.1.3, I shall be getting one from our site sponsor

Yes, the dm500 performs at those speeds with the 0963 caid. However I dont want my dm to run 24/7 so I have a mini itx pc running my cards. At one point i even used a nslu2 to run a server...

Yeah the 3121 is a very good purchase.

On a similar subject, I can have only one card in my DB500 but if I have more cards will I need an external card reader? how to connect it to the box? By using the RS232 on the back of the box?
