Anyone know why the beeb isn't transmitting the F1 in HD, or when they will be doing?

The BBC doesn't film it they just receives whatever feed they're given. If it were down to them then they'd probably broadcast in HD but it's out of their handsComment

Bernie Ecclestone predicted back in june that it wont be a reality till at least 2012
Ecclestone: No F1 in HD before 2012 - from Motorsport.co.ukComment

F1 is broadcasted primarly by Free to air operators across the world such as the BBC via roof aerials, HD content has only been realy implemented by Satellite & some cable providers , untill HD is rolled out by terrestrial broadcasters in a large majorty of countries F1 will remain in Analogue or Digital.
Ecclestone would love for F1 to be in HD on subscription television all across the Globe as it would make a lot of money for the rights holding company SLEC Holdings, but it would not reach everyone & they make as much from selling it to every country in an Analogue or Digital signal because every country can broadcast it terrestrialy.Comment

how do Sky Sport Germany and ORF show it in HD then? Is it upscaled? Looks alot nicer however they do it

The contact is owned by Fuji Film, who do all of the filiming for the races.
Its this kind of thing that annoys me about the FIA, they have no clue what people want, and are living in the past.
My local cinema was advertising showings of a few races, I have never been to it, but i have been told that it looked good, and the commentators was not the bbc people. I wonder if an HD feed might exist somewhere..?Comment

Yeah this is again misadvertising to draw in German subscribers, But Sky Deutchland are doing nothing wrong because they have there own camera crew at the race track for there live commentary feeds much like Jake Humperys, Eddie Jordan etc on the BBC , which Sky Deutchland broadcast in HD but any race action is only in a Digital Format upscaled for Sky Sports HD Deutchland.
But there is little differance between BBC's coverage and Sky Deutchland when it comes to picture quality as the receiver upscales it anyway.
Sky Germany are only selling this to people who do not know any better, they know if you have a HD Receiver it will upscale a Digital picture into something that looks a little better and a little sharper.
I do not think a British channel would get away with this, surprised that a Sky branded network classified HD content on the strength of there track side coverage and not the actual sport thats been covered.
After all its still only a Digital Picture/signal even if its upscaled somewhat by them of the receiver.Last edited by alunfennell; 17 August, 2010, 15:13.Comment

Actually your hitting on the truth a little because the Japanese GP at Suzuka (Sponsored by Fuji ) is the only Race of the season broadcased in HD but only in Japan, while we get a Downscaled Version beamed back across the Globe for a world wide audience.Comment

That very much depends on how good your receiver is and how good your TV set manages to handel the upscaling of SD channels.
However when German commentary are conducting Interviews with Micki lauda etc track side ( and in the pits etc) Quality is very high as its in HD.
But when it comes to Cars on the track racing / practice or qualifying while a touch brighter detail between BBC upscaled picture and Sky Germany supposed HD coverage look very similar.
Maybe we should revisit this Thread again after the next race, I might have a different opinion on it if I have a closer look as I am only running from memory at this time.Comment

Wow, I was always under the impression that the host country tv network filmed it like BBC at Silverstone etc.
It's a shame if the above comments are true because it should at least be being recorded in HD so that in future time we can look back and see it in HD or buy the DVD sets in HD.
Quite ironic really when F1 wants to show the world the leading edge in technology and no HD!! Perhaps Bernies wrinkles show up too much!!Comment
