    Tring warn Pubs

New satellite football warning for pubs
    By John Harrington
    31/01/2011 08:32

Albania-based Tring TV is the latest foreign broadcaster to warn UK licensees that anyone using its cards to screen Premier League football risks having them turned off.

In an open letter to licensees, Tring TV programming director Igli Hasani says the company has "become aware of a problem in the UK where pubs are using Tring TV decoder cards to view Barclays Premier League football".

The letter says Tring TV "does not have any rights to broadcast Premier League football outside of [Albania]."

"Subsequently our Tring TV cards are not allowed to be sold outside of the territory, and no person in the United Kingdom can make a payment to us or any supplier to view in the UK.

"If we receive information that such cards are being illegally used in the UK, we will immediately switch off such cards.

"Nobody in the UK has the authority to offer for sale, import or use Tring TV cards in the UK."

It follows similar warnings in the past 12 months from Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland.

The warning comes in a crucial week for the long-running legal saga over foreign satellite TV involving Hampshire licensee Karen Murphy.

On Thursday, the advocate general of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) is due to give her view to judges at the ECJ, who are expected to hand down their verdict within the next three months.

The ECJ has been examining whether EU competition law permits the use of decoder cards from non-UK broadcasters can be used to screen Premier League games in UK pubs

just more rubbish that they are legally obliged to say, if they were really serious then they would take a closer look at their own re-sellers in albania and stop them from selling abroad, and i doubt they will do that

The letter from broadcaster NetMed Hellas, seen by the MA, warns licensees not to be fooled by suppliers purporting to be acting legitimately on our behalf

Even if the Murphy case goes in favor of the licensees. They would not be covered by that ruling as Albanian is not part of the EUC so showing tring in pubs could still get them in hot water

Advocate general has advised the judges that SKY cannot block sales of cards to anywhere in the EU! Fantastic news as this advice to the court usually sticks. So lets hope football on a saturday for all cheap! come on! S*Y shafted great.
            Keep calm carry on.

Good news for owners of foreign cards then
But I suspect pubs showing epl games to the public just might be treated differently, hope I'm wrong

Hi. SKY or other broadcatsers CANNOT stop you watching what you want whether in a pub or at home with official cards from anywhere in the EU. This applies to ALL EU countries. There is one single rule for EVERYBODY. This means you can watch SKY UK in FRANCE, SPAIN, ITALY etc etc. This of course applies only if you have a valid official card from SKY, NOVA GREEK etc etc. If SKY want to stop you watching the 3pm matches it will have to apply in ALL the EU countries. Regards.

Hi. It dont matter if its advertising or not the RULES apply to ALL EU members. If they have 3pm matches in SPAIN they have to have them in all EU countries. Come to thing of it it dont matter if its 3pm or 10pm the law is the same. The only way out for SKY is to give the 3pm matches to non EU countries only. Regards.

Sky maybe cant but the rights holders almost certainly can. Its a fairly fundamental part of the copyright laws that a rightholder has the right to control how and where their products and wares are distributed. I doubt if even the EU would interfere in such things due to the potential backlash from US based content owners.

Pubs, btw, would still require permission from the rights holders for public performance. Purchasing a 'domestic' card for usage in such a situation would certainly be a breach of copyright laws as well as the t&c's attached to the card.

Hi. can you NOT understand what the EU judgement was about. It has nothing to do with copyrights or who owns what. In the EU there is one rule for EVERYBODY not just for SKY/EPL etc. If you allow 3pm matches in FRANCE ITALY etc etc you HVE to allow them in ALL EU countries. It is the same if you want to drink French or Italian wine , you dont have to go to France or Italy to drink it. Also what has America got to do with EU laws?? SKY was trying to tell the pub lady what she can and cannot watch - under EU laws this is ILLEGAL and UNLAWFUL. Regards.
