You are in the same boat as I.For the short term I am having some luck with the rare sept 2,2011 firmware. It seems to work on most hd tp's (except for SR30000 ones)

My 500gb 2.5" portable USB2 usb powered benchmarks between 27 & 30Mbps transfer, I have no problems recording and playback of HD channels on my S9 .. The firmware on my S9 is 11-08-15 , which I guess is 15th August 2011 ..

Are there specific HD channels causing you the problem, or is it all HD channels recording? If its just on 1 or 2 then let me know and I'll test on them myself..

          size vs time

Check the file size of your hd recordings vs the time in seconds.
I can play a 1633m recording 1657 seconds long, which to me sounds like roughly 1MBs.Other jerky recordings vary from 1.7 to 3MBs.It seems the transfer rate has to be 30x those rates which isn't doable for the sr 30000 tp's in my mind.
Unless you can get the nbc hd on 103w, checking out the channels is a moot point.

that may be a sata drive in a conversion case.
I may just buy a big sata drive and use the sata case I have now.
The troublesome drives are all pata in an external case, which may be the key to the mystery.

                  sata

eventually I will get a sata drive, either desktop or one in a case already. That is probably the trick to recording hd.I noticed some are 7200 rpm with a 16meg buffer.

No not tried old firmware as everything else works great so I dont really want to mess about with that coz knowing my luck something would go drastically wrong
                      Thanks deb

Just backup all your settings before you try to load.
I had issues with the early august firmware and the lip sync problem.

I changed to the 2.9.11 firmware but the recording is still no better so I think I'll just have to admit defeat unless I can get a sata drive off someone to try how do you back up your settings there's only an option tupgrade or dump via USB
                            Thanks deb

                                scroll

dump by usb and scroll the menu where it says dump mode
misc files then select&dump then ok then go wild selecting
