    Skybox f3 power issue?

So my skybox has been spot on with no issues at all for last couple of months. I come home from work yesterday and the box wont power up at all? Nothing! Checked lead and fuse all ok so im thinking psu? Anyone had this issue and a test/fix I could do before buying psu?

I see it can take a 12v supply does this bypass the psu as I imagine psu is used as a transformer to stepdown the power.

its one or two caps that pop i think its c11 and c15 they are only cheap to buy if you are good at soldering. they usually smell and can swell if they have popped.test them if you have a tester, or they sell power boards on flebay for around ?18 cheaper from china but you have to wait about 3 weeks.

Spot on I didnt want to open it before checking on the forums but more than happy to replace components. I will get it opened up and tested. Thanks for that speedy reply.

That 12v socket is an output, not an input...

Don't have an F3, but a bricked S9/10/11 also show no signs of life, as if the PSU has gone.

Do you have, or know anyone with a multimeter to check the voltages of the PSU?

You could try flashing the box using the RS232 port if the PSU looks ok.

The F3 PSU board has a different layout to the S10/11 boards. So does the F3 PSU still have the same circuit references as the S10/11 PSU boards?

Why would it brick if its just sitting there though and working fine? Ive not checked the psu yet but will check outputs etc to see if its getting power out of the psu to the loom

sometimes they do brick for no apparent reason. but on the s range(Ali3602 chips) it has a timebomb in the firmware updates that brick any fake/clone boxes after 10 switch ons maybe they have started using the timebomb in f and m ranges(Ali3601 chips)?? says nothing on the website about Ali3601

Box is genuine and not a clone as far as im aware due to provider. But if it was a clone box would a recovery work?

if it was a clone you would have to recover it with clone safe firmware. i suppose it would recover with official firmware but would brick again after 10 times but dont quote me on that. worst part is you cannot check what chip it has in via information cause it wont switch on and as stated it only says the s range

                          • How to identify clone Ali3602 HD Receiver (updated on Apr.18,2012)

                            Dear consumers :

If you have an Ali3602 HD Receiver like SKYBOX S9, S10, S11, S12...there is a method to identify if it is original (quality goods) or clone.

Before identify , please backup your old software on the box by usb.

enter menu---tool---information---press "8888" key, now you will see CHIP ID . If the box CHIP ID is in the chip_id_list, congratulatation, your HD Receiver is original version! You can upgrade any new firmware to experience more new functions. Otherwise, You Box is clone version , please recover the software with the old version! This software will kill the clone box when power on over 10 times. If less than 10 times, no kill for clone verion.
the chip_id_list is the following, it will update everyday: (updated date :18/04/2012)
                            00D0
                            00EA

                            1509
                            15AE

                            1801

When you buy a new box , try to view the chip_id_list on this http page. If you can not find the valid "CHIP ID" on the chip_id_list, it means your box is a clone box.

Hmm my skybox m3 has just died too. There is a faint burnt smell from it. I plugged in my adaptor for the wdtv live (also 12v) red led blinks a few times then goes out. Could the caps problem be the cause too ?
