Dead s10 - recoverable or not?

Hi all, my s10 appears to have hit the bricks after 18 months.
There's no light on and it doesn't appear to be powering up. However, there does appear to be some life in as it's making an audible noise.
Anything that can be done to resuscitate this box?

    Many thanks, as always!

I'll try the rs232 method, but I'm doubtful.
    I'm thinking possibly PSU malfunction?

it shouldn't make noise unless the power supply bit the dust

If you open it up & look on the PSU board, you will probably find C11 (& possibly C15) bulging. These will need to be changed.

          C11 = 1000uF 10v & C15 = 470uF 10v. They need to be 105C types & low ESR. I always use Panasonic types.

So maybe a new PSU board will revive the box, Hadron?

              Maybe but not always.

Have any of your mates got an s10. I put two side by side and pull the plug from the motherboard (on the good box) that goes back to the PSU then plug it into the dead box motherboard power up the good PSU and if the dead box boots up (Front display lights up) confirms a replacement psu will do the job.

They are only ?5 or ?6 from China but take 2-3 week to arrive.

Have a look first at the PSU board. C11 & C15 are the most common problems for these boards failing. If you or a friend has some soldering experience, you can change them yourself. Look on ebay for the values & make that I posted.

If you can't change them yourself, then you could change the whole board. You might get a few ? back by selling the old one on Ebay. Somebody, somewhere will buy it & repair it!

How right that is. I bought one last year from China and put the duff one on the bay. Got 50P more for the duff one than I paid for the new one.

...or an S11. They both use the same PSU.

If you need the PSU quicker, they are available from the UK on Ebay, but you will pay double the price!

Yeah, sadly I don;t have any soldering experience! Nor do I know anybody with an Openbox.
I may 'splash out' on a replacement from China .....

Fixed another 2 of these power boards myself yesterday with said problematic capacitors gone. It's a common problem on s10 and s11 power boards unfortunately but the ones being sold on Ebay are supposed to be the updated power boards that fixes this problem, in other words there using better capacitors.
