    Mine was perfect until someone told me I had to delete my channel list before installing the updated one, which I had never done before.

      I have always done this and never had a problem. I do, however, restart box after deleting channel list and again after adding to new channel list.

      If yours is just rebooting cos of channels then can you keep pressing menu button during bootup and see if you can access menu without it restarting.

          It's a myth. The firmware will be stored in either EEPROM or flash memory and these were designed to be erased and reflashed. There is no harm in this except there is a limited amount of times reflash can be done but as this figure is generally very high (higher than hundred thousands of times) it wont present as a problem for normal life of product.

          Oh and there is no telephone line connected to these boxes. A $ky box has a telephone line yes but not these boxes and even reflashing $ky boxes will not cause problems at end of phone line.
