      A few observations

      1. Dreambox support is FAR better thqan any other STB, My first box was a Technomate and the software for that has not caught up with Dreambox yet after more thn 2 years. It also lacks several features the DM has.
      2. Clones are cheap for many reasons, most importantly is that there is no post sales support - try to get a dud fixed. They also use inferior quality components, most important are low quality capacitors. They try to compensate by adding fans.
      3. The DM500HD only shares part of its name with the old DM500 - look at the specs, for starters the DM500HD has a 400Mhz processor and double the memory. It is much closer related to the DM800; looking at the specs it seems like it is a better STB than the DM800. Only downside is that the hard disk has to be connected externally with eSata and the tuners are soldered into the board.
      4. The price is much better than the DM800HD for a higer spec machine (it seems). I get mine on Tuesday from SMS and will post my findings once I have had a play with it.
      5. Its a shame it does not have an OLED display, but \I suppose that would have required a bigger box.

How about the flag ship DM 8000 model for ?271 plus free shipping, still cheaper then the DM500HD and you'd probably get another dm500s thrown in for 300 notes if you were to be a bit cheeky.Check it out

?329!! LMFAO, DMM are having a laugh at that price. Buy a VU+Duo for ?399, Enigma 2, Dual Tuner, fit internal HDD just like a DM8000, but less than half the price

No, no requirement to have a loop-through be it SD or HD. The loopthrough would allow you to take the signal in and out to another second receiver if you wanted, but it's not needed for the original receiver to function.

                        Hi guys,

I'm new to all this so go easy!

Does this look like a good deal to you? Bit wary of buying from China, but every penny counts at the minute...

Drop Shipping DM800 Dreambox 800 HD PRV Set Top Box Satellite ...USD209.0 Wholesale Price at DHgate.com

I'd prefer to buy from UK of course, but it seems much more expensive - unless anyone can recommend anywhere?

                        Cheers

Dont touch dh gate they are a nightmare to deal with if any thing goes wrong. Also there is a new dm800se coming out so these boxes may drop in price when the new model arrives.
Another problem buying direct from china is you may get customs charges

                              Thanks guys,

so where is reliable in the UK? I'm torn between the dm500 and dm800. 500 is obviously cheaper, but I have a full hd tv so seems a shame not to use it properly!

Is there a reliable HD receiver that doesn't have PVR facility? Would be cheaper I guess??

And is there REALLY a problem with clones? My brother has a dm800 clone and has had no problems with it.

If it helps, I don't want a motorised dish etc - I only want to be able to access Sly. Not bothered about foreign channels / sats.

As I said, I'm new to this so am open to suggestions....

                              Cheers
