    fan options DM800HD

    Hi All,

After a week of intense reading, i think ive got over the main hurdles of making the jump to satellite...

Ive got a DM800HD, and its running a bit hot. Its not noisy but getting hot.

I was wondering if i could change the fan inside the box?
i havent opened box yet, but was wondering if there were better/uprated cfm fans that could replace the existing one.

Im not too sure of the size of the fan, will check it out next time i get my hands on the box, unless someone else kindly posts.

I know sunon make pretty quiet fans with high cfm rates, im hoping i can find a better quality fan with similar voltage...
If not, ill cool it with external cooling. Just not keen on having to replace them external ones too often, as sometimes im away and i know family wouldnt notice

    Any input appreciated.
    Thanks for reading.

others use a laptop cooler to keep them cool, hotboxes are known to give problems running hd content, think i remember seeing posts in the dream sat section also.

thats curious i would have thought under was better closer to the chip, and as hot air rises out through top vents you are trying to keep it in.

          fan

not if you have the fan sucking the air as opposed to blowing as i said it works for me cool as ice no problem

Same Idea as the Se as the fan is on topand sucking instead of blowing.

            Almost sounds seedy

              cooling

Get a laptop usb cooler and then a rocker switch from somewhere (usually maplins for aound ?1). Then if you want to put your box and standby the fans still spin, so you can just turn them off using the switch.

Wiring the switch itself is fairly easy, just remove a section of the insulation. Cut the negative wire, wire one end to one side of the switch and the other end to the other side of the switch and use insulation tape to secure.

thanks to all, and to nokia!

                      Hi guys,

thanks so much for all the reponses, apologies on delay.

I sorted out my own homemade fan system...
I had some decent silent pc fans lying around.
I ended up modding them, and making my own cooler.

I didnt want to do the scart option, just cause im lazy.
Thanks for showing it tho, Hopefully others may use it and make it.

Ive made my cooler using two antec fans, joined and powred via an old spare nokia charger.

Sound is silent, and box is ice cold, ive left the HD channels on for hours now, and box is freezing (hmm, maybe i need a heater, )

Luckily i had a nice selection of fans in the loft, from my attempts at overclocking back in early 2000.
The sunon fans were ok, but a bit more noisy compared to the Antec fans. u should have heard the sunon 120mm ones, , like a dyson on crack.

Overall, im well glad. Saved myself a couple of pence, and made use of an old nokia charger that was heading for the bin...

I realise it cant turn itself on and off with box, but the nokia plug is connected in the same extension plug as the tv, so whenever im turning the tv on and off, the fans do come on and off.

Many thanks to all for all the input on this thread.
Hopefully it may help others aswell deciding how and what to do for cooling.

                      Regards,

                      Zayne

Hi reddevil, hope you well my friend.

Yeah, ill go take some now, and post em.
only a camera phone though, apologies.
Will try and find Digi cameras batteries for next time.

Its deffo not eyecandy at the moment tho, as i used red insulation tape as a temp fix, whist trying it out.
I was going to use the lil fans, but they ended up being noiser than the bigger ones. Plus these big ones seem to cover all the vent slots perfectly.

I added these lil rubber grommets to the bottom of the fans, which have raised them a few mm off the box, completely ridding em of any noise from vibration. Ill try and take a pic now.

Left the HD channels on overnight just to see, and in the morning, all was fine and box was still so cold...

Im making a small holding frame for it, and will make it black to match.
Not sure though, as i got a feeling it will look ok when i use black insulation tape to secure.
                          Lemme go take some pics....

hi there lombard, thanks for posting.
If poss, please do stick some pics on.

The more ideas the better for all.
What make of 120mm are you using?
My sunons were real noisy, mind you, they must be nearing 10 years old now

Wiring was easy, just stripped the pc connectors off the end of the fans. Then joined the same coloured wires from the fans together. Then cut the nokia charger connector off, and split cable, joined the wires to the appropriate coloured fan wires, and up and running.
One fan had an extra wire for control i think, i just cut it off.
Both fans are connected to each other, so they move as a single unit. Nice and tight (just the way i like it, hehehe)

, dont laugh too hard at tape...it is a first time job,
hoping the black insulation tape will make it easier to handle on the old eyes.

Them little grommets make such a difference.
Didnt notice straight away, but i was getting a slight vibration when the fans were just sitting on box. Since grommets added, i cant hear em, even when im next to it.
