my dm800 has run fine just on the factory issue fan for 12 months now (running 24/7)
Only issue i encountered was it got a little noisey after 2-3 weeks . this wasnt a sign of a faulty fine , just that it had run dry and no lube , easily fixed with a dab of vaseline on the fan , peel back the sticker and coat the middle spindle area with it and re-attack the sticker , been running quietly since for best part of a year

I am wondering... Is it possible to write a script to the usb to stop sending power to usb. So the a usb fan can stop going into standby?

        fan DM 800

        Hi,
I have DM 800 HD and had similar issues with fan which was noisy.
Opened the box took the fan out, removed the sticker on the back and gave it a bit of castrol GTX mobil oil with an ear cleaning bud (Still Noisy)
        Tried WD 40 (still Noisy).
Tried changing the fan, bought a new fan from ebay, after one day even more noisy than the original one.
Tried removing the brush at the edges of the fan (Still Noisy)

Bought an external USB cooler fan from ebay since then no issues.

Yes the fan runs all the time even in standby that is true but in reality that gives the box more protection than harm.

Hope this will be help ful.

i do the same, runs fine with just the external fan., i do switch my box off over night every night, via the correct shutdown procedure with no rebooting problems.

I just ordered a Thermaltake Mobile Fan II External USB Cooling Fan (5v). There's a connecting point inside my DM800HD which a fan of 5v uses (this fan stops on standby). I will disconnect that fan and connect with this new Thermaltake fan. I will cut a hole on the cover and install the new Thermaltake fan and draw the heat out.

thats a bit drastic mate , may struggle to sell it in future if you want rid , as stb`s with a hole in the roof aren`t very sale-able

hahaha... I will most probably uses it til it's broke
Or of course I can leave the DM800hd cover out and just cut a hole out of a cover of an old out of order Pioneer DVD player and place that over the DM800HD. Hehehe
