doesnt it need to be formatted to fat32 prior to putting it in box?

what does the box format it as?
It will format the drive to Linux I suspect

If you telnet to your DM800SE you will be at the linux command prompt

        enter the command mount

it should return something like this

rootfs on / type rootfs (rw)
        /dev/root on / type jffs2 (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
none on /dev type tmpfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw)
usbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
        /dev/mtdblock2 on /boot type jffs2 (ro)
tmpfs on /var type tmpfs (rw)
tmpfs on /tmp type tmpfs (rw)
        /dev/sda1 on /media/hdd type ext3 (rw,data=ordered)

The last line is my SATA HDD I added, you can see the type as ext3

This is the standard Linux file system type.

I have a 250GB HDD installed. I had it from a laptop upgrade so was just sitting around.

All depends on how much you record and keep on your box

I'm new to Dreambox and Sat stuff too but this DM800SE is really impressive.

You can stream channels over your network too and listen to radio and music, YouTube etc so if your going to use it a lot maybe a big HDD is required

I use L&W, personally I would stay well clear of Yaoxin.

i hear mixed opinions about yoaxin to be honest.
