Just to confirm though on the DM800 the DVI connection 100% does pass audio and the receiver comes with the DVI-HDMI adapter.

In all honesty if you can then wait around a few more weeks before taking the plunge, we've got the Technomate, VU+ SOLO and Q-BOX Mini all due out and all running Enigma2 like the Dreambox and no doubt at a lot better pricing point... There is also the VU+ DUO which has taken Europe by storm! We're sold out now as is most of Europe but they'll be more soon around the end of March, they are offering Twin Tuner, HDMI connection, Enigma2 that'll run CCcam as client and server, 3 groups supporting images (PLi, VTi and Original) and now as announced yesterday Dream Elite will be supporting the VU+ DUO and releasing an image in days! It don't get much better than this!

All I'm saying don't be to quick on this one to jump in and by a Dreambox because finally there is a bit of choice on the market rather than buying and original or choosing a 2nd rate clone, you've now got some real choices!
thanks for the info mate, i think i might just wait then, can you please keep me posted soon as you have more details on these 3 boxs your talking about, they sound very good to me.

    p.s
what model is the technomate thats coming out ?

I work with video HDMI DVI DP etc and the DM800 hdmi dvi port will give you audio over HDMI no problem. They didnt want to pay/get the license only. I have DTS audio on the DVI to HDMI cable.

I'd love a 500S but I only am tester for my day job.

so wheres the technical stuff done then, in the cable or the box or both ? something must do it as a normal dvi connection will never ever carry sound, only video.

All I can say is that DVI to HDMI connection with the DM800 does carry audio as I have one. It does DTS on my HD channels fine and a friend of mine has one direct tv connection fine.

Digital Visual Interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

          DVI to HDMI
DVI is mostly compatible with HDMI (see Compatibility with DVI). The main difference is that DVI typically carries no audio data in its TMDS channel, although increasingly, modern PC video hardware is providing audio (e.g. cards by NVIDIA[2] and ATI[3]), allowing the PC to send audiovisual data to a high definition television with an HDMI input. If a PC's DVI output does not provide audio, it can be patched in as part of the DVI to HDMI adapter.

Yes mate, thats what my posts said earlier, it has to be either an adaptor, or something, dvi on its own doesnt do audio.

            anyways, doesnt matter now, .

i probably wont be buying a dreambox 800Hd as those new boxs are coming out very soon that the other user sat-shop posted, dreambox isnt value for money now, i know cause i have a 500c and its old sh*t, , hope they hurry up with the stock of these new boxs

Well there is no reason why the first rev of the DM500 won't be poor. Lack of image etc. If I knew otherwise then I would buy one tomorrow.

do you mean the 500HD mate ? (sat box ?) if so then thats different from the old 500 standard box.

I would personally take the advice of the earlier poster like i'm doing and wait on these new boxs that are coming out, if they are true to they'r word then they are far better than the dream 800HD, and for less money.

My 500 cable box has gave me years of enjoyment and its still going strong, but its starting to lose its sparkle when you look at what these new HD sat boxs can do, so its a no brainer really.

I am a Test Engineer for a company(you can guess, but I won't admit who) who takes it very seriously. I don't know how DM could possibly test this product as it is to be used with an version of the OS that they never tested with it. never buy rev A.

                        Dreambox specs should read DVI-I

Personally speaking i would just buy a cheap as chips digital audio cable for the sound as the 800hd has a digital audio output, so as long as your amp or tv has digital audio input then thats the way to go, i have device like that in the house just now.

I would still love to know the technical explanation though of how the 800 produces the sound from a dvi-to-hdmi cable if anyone knows ?

Guys, DVI comes in 2 normal everyday uses: DVI-D and DVI-I. I've looked at a picture of the back of the DM 800 and its DVI port and can plainly see its of the DVI-I standard. DVI-I carries both digital and analog signels where as the DVI-D only carries digital. Hope that clears things up for some. The specs only say DVI when it should say DVI-I.

Can't wait to get my DM 8000 in a weeks time, DM rule!!!

                          Hi
after reading this post these questions are still not clear 2 me
i appreciate it if you could clarify them :
                          1. do dm 800hd/500hd upconvert 1080i to 1080p?
2.do dm 800hd/500hd upconvert sd to hd?
if the answer is no, is there any receiver that does this functions?
